Hey guys i just picked me up an 04 4runner SR5 4x4. I bought it from a MItsubishi *Fairfield Kia* dealership in NH with 98k miles for 11k. So far i like this truck but im a little worried the dealers misinformed or wasn't honest. I found it on autotrader looks clean and nice in the picture i thought i had seen a check engine light on and my salesman checked with the mechanic and said it was only a tire indicator light and he was 100% positive that's all it was. Ok so i purchased it about a week ago seems nice and i have enjoyed it so far however i was still curious about him saying check engine light so i put my obd-II into it and it's reading PO456 "evap very small leak* but there is no "check engine light" on at all... I'm confused could the dealer have done something to keep the light from tripping? Anything i can do to check it. I appreciate it and thank you.

sometimes you can reset it, and it stays off for a little. It may go back on. Regardless, if the truck is decent in all other respects, you did get a great deal.

Btw, for future reference. Unless you actually find fault with the dealer doing something faulty, it's just you assuming. I'm not a fan of dealers, but, at the same time, it's not right to name them in your post.

I think any person should be aware of a dealership if they are not honest it looks out for the other person. I'm not saying they are at fault but dealership can be shady. I usually only buy off private sellers because i've had more luck buying a used car that way unless it's brand new. However with the code that i have why isn't the CEL not tripping? I thought the ODBII only read when the CEL is on?

I agree, but you're throwing claims before you know for sure. Can't just assume and bad mouth.

By the way heres a pic of my rig.

I just got it a week ago, there's no check engine light on since i've had it. Can you explain to me why there is a code on the ODB-2 with no CEL? So yes i feel there is an issue. I work on car's myself and i am gently with car's so know it's not something i've done. I also have not fill the tank yet either. Drove it about 79 miles since i had it.

Update my sales guy is cool he said he will eat the bill for a gas cap. I told him i will try that first. I erased the code on the actron scanner let you guys know what happens.

BTW what are some easy mods to do to the 04?

Smits, first of all, congratulations on the new car and welcome to the forum. The code could be from something as simple as the gas cap not tightened properly or a faulty gas cap. I'd start there and check all the vacuum lines around the charcoal canister and under the hood. Clear the code, disconnect the battery and let everything reset (you might have to reconfigure the window auto up and down feature after doing this). Then run the car as you normally would for a few days and check it again.

As to your question of someone doing something to prevent the CEL from going on when there's a code. I had a 1993 SR5 Toyota pick up that ran great. Then one day somewhere around 180k the CEL kicked on. After disconnecting the battery, the CEL turned off and didn't turn on again. When I went to get a smog check, the shop told me that it failed because of a code. After some tests, the shop verified that I had a burned exhaust valve. Code was there, problem was there, CEL light was not on.

It would be hard to prove that the dealer intentionally did that to cover up a code. Does your state require the seller to be responsible for the vehicle to be smog compliant at the time of sale? As a dealer, they may be responsible for making it compliant. You might want to look into that. BTW, I see no problem stating the dealers name when all you had was an inquiry and not a direct accusation. It's like asking, "I paid 11k for it, did the dealer rip me off?"

Good luck and hope its not like what The Josh went through.

Edit: Didn't see your updated post about the gas cap. Glad everything turned out.

Thanks man i appreciate it. All my car's lately have been Yota's. I've owned 2 corollas, a solara, a tacoma 2wd, and a lexus. My lexus and corolla was best car'd i've owned!

Yeah they wanted i think 11900 for it. I talked them down to 11k. I made sure to ask if it had an issues he said no there wasn't a check engine light on or anything. When i got the runner had no check engine light and is running good however i put that scanner on today because i was curious and it read that po456 saying small evap leak. One thing i did notice with the gas cap is that i turned it to the right tighting it 3 click and after that turn it left and it opening real easy without any effort makes me think the cap is bad because it very easy. I'm hoping that's all it is. My state does not do emmissions testing but I still want a car that don't have any cel lights. I erased the code with my actron drove it down my hill and it hasn't came back on yet. Are the 04 v6's pretty reliable? I did some research on them and seems like they are. Anything else i should know about the 04?

I bought mine at Tynans Kia in Ft. Collins.

Yeah I can state their name all day...end day.

If they are going to put stickers on my truck stating their name for advertising purposes along with license plate brackets...Then they must want their name out there.
