New member on here but I've been lurking and checking out the forum for info for two or three yrs now doing research on 3rd gens, we finally found the wife her 3rd gen about a yr or so ago, a one owner 98 limited 4wd, city vehicle, super clean and a pile of service records, 160k on the odometer, shortly after purchasing it I replaced the radiator, water pump, crank and cam seals, idler, belt etc. I also replaced the upper and lower ball joints and basically rebuilt the front end, I used all oem parts from Camelback Toyota and AirCabinMan on eBay, we have put about 15k miles on it since then and we are very happy with it, we plan to keep it for a very long time, we've had a few minor things come up, nothing serious, but that's expected with a 20 yr old vehicle, I do have the rear axles out of its right now but I think what I have is an uncommon issue maybe and I'll start a new thread in the 3rd gen section.
