i know, i know...new members are a dime a dozen...but this one has pictures...and a proper demonstration of how to break in a new car!

brand new from the dealer 2006 SE V6 4x4, my first new car

so clean....click for big ones





Now, that state of cleanliness lasted for ohh...12 minutes, then i went through a 1 foot deep puddle (err...small lake) and changed all that...

here she looks after driving across the country in 2.5 days, lol

that's a mix of snow, mud, silt, and dirt. I drove it from CA going through OR...and then east. Hasn't seen any salt...yet

Any tips on keeping the corrosion down? Just hose it after the roads have been salted? The dealer told me not to wax it for a year...what's up with that?

I've definitely got the modding bug...but prolly should pay the ute off first, lol.

thanks! they just said it came with like 6 coats from the factory.

liking the forum alot...i'm mostly a motorcycle gearhead, but i guess i could get into this SUV/Truck thing, lol.

couple quick questions though...

1) i've tried to read up on it, but it seems to me the '06 is essentially an '05 except with some powertrain and cosemetic differences? yes? no? wtf?

2) cold air intake, worth while? which kit? K&N i read

3) my air scoop goes no where...but i've heard mention that on previous or models in different markets it does, what's the 411?

1. that still surprises me. i was thinking they applied some special coating at the dealership. if its all factory, you can wax it as soon as you like.

yeah, its basically an 05. biggest changes i think were rounded fenders, cosmetic changes to the rear and front bumpers. the turn signals are no longer on the front bumper. the fog lights are circular, and i think are no longer projectors. the headlights are now halogen projectors. the taillights are LED. and i think that's the main changes. theres a thread on here that states the changes. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12217

2. from some of the other posts, not really worth it. at least doesn't give the performance you'd expect from it. Someone did a test with the K&N FIPK system, and found the OEM filter to be better. there's a thread on it somewhere. but there's mixed reviews on the site too.

3. yeah, the hood scoop is cosmetic in the states. i believe on the diesel models outside of the states, the hood scoop is functional as it goes to the top mounted intercooler.

I usually wash it a day or two after a snowstorm. I try and wait until the salt is completely off of the road. Basically, the best thing is to not leave the salt on your vehicle for a long period of time. Mine has seen enough snowstorms and I haven't had it for an entire winter yet!

About not waxing, usually I've heard anywhere from 30-90 days from most body shops to give the paint a chance to cure. I haven't heard of not waxing for a year. Check with a detailer to be certain.

thing is, i've only heard that for aftermarket paint jobs. anything factory should be ready to be waxed. that's how i've always understood it, and have treated it that way.

Welcome to the site and to the 4Runner family!

Being that you have a BLACK truck you will need to use special care when washing and waxing. You need to search for the details and techniques needed. You also would want visit other sites specific in car detailing because of your color. Do NOT just wash the vehicle the normal way or you will have fine scratches in short time.
