V8 Runner

New member
I've been lurking the forum for a while now and finally purchased a 2003 sports edition V8 4 runner. I planned on putting on some Daystar leveling kit but when I took the 4runner to service, I found out that the 2 rear shocks have rusted through and needs to be replaced :violin:
So here comes the noob question, what are the best after market shocks and when replaced, do i need to do anything about the X-REAS system or does it work with aftermarket shocks or do i have to take them out.

I do plan on doing some mild off-roading.

Thanks and glad to be a part of the community.

Welcome!

It's my understanding that you need to replace the whole system if you go aftermarket. I am not positive on this though. If you want to stay XREAS, you would need to get the same rear shocks.

Springs can be replaced, but not the shocks. Am I correct on this?

Thanks! I took it to the shop and even the mechanic was unsure about the XREAS system. I guess it's time to do some digging.

Welcome to the forum. Check out this link for suspension options: Suspension sticky

X-reas system = shocks. So yes, it'll have to come out if you're putting in aftermarket ones. Use Search for a bunch of removal and general X-reas info.

correct, you could also use fj springs and get some lift at the same time.

Read those two threads, twice maybe a third just to be safe! I know I did BUT I didn't find complete info on a v8, BUT I did just end up doing it.

Our trucks have one thing in common, V8 and worn suspension.

What I did was 2013 For cruiser coils Springs. Tacoma bilstiens hd yellows in the front and 2008 fj cruiser rear Bilsteins yellow hd shocks. Daystar 2.5/1.5 level lift. I also did 285.65.18 bfg at KO's. This set up net me 4.5"of lift and set me back $1500 tires were used (Craigslist for $240 for the set), Springs were new used ($100), shocks 250, wheels 550, daystar 150, and labor 200. This combo works on a V8 with no need for control arms or much Fender cutting or rubbing or grinding.

Thanks for the indepth explination. One thing that caught my eye is that I won't be needing my control arms? The reason is that my front right control arm's ball joint is worn and the whole arm needs to be replaced and it seems to be around 400 bucks to replace that 1 part.
