Hello guys, i just sold my lexus gs350 today and im looking for a 4th gen or 5th gen 4runner. just wondering what common issue are among these 4runners? A couple buddies of mines have the 3rd gen and they love it. just wanted to get some more info. thanks in advances.

Welcome aboard! I had a IS300 for 12 years and 270,000 miles. I absolutely loved it. Now, I'm loving my '07 4Runner. I'm on a smartphone so I don't know how to provide the link but you should check out the "pre-purchase..." stickie on the top section of the 4th Gen section. Good luck!

Not sure about the 5th, but the most common issues on the 4th are head gaskets on the v6s, seized front calipers, and something a lot of people look out for is the timing belt changed on the V8 around 100k. I believe it may be pricey if you have to do it after.

I believe there's a sticky at the top of the 4th subforum with a lot of prospective buyer info.
 
If I were in your shoes, I'd buy a 2011 TE (preferably coming off lease if you can find one) for a couple reasons...
1) It's practically a new vehicle without the brand new price
2) It's newer with lower mileage than any 4th gen you can find...
3) The 5th gen's went back to the manual stick for the 4wd actuation instead of the electronic actuators on 4th gen's that seize up frequently in the transfer case with lack of use (one less thing to worry about long term).
4) I don't tow a lot and when I do it's under 2000 lbs so a V8 is meaningless to me. A v8 is not an option for the 5th gen....
5) 2010 was the first year and it's my personal perference to never buy the first year of any redesign, for the 5th gen 4Runner this was 2010, so I say 2011.

I say the above with two 4th gen's sitting in our household driveway. Rock solid reliable vehicles no doubt, but if I was in the market for a 4Runner right now I would be shopping for a 5th gen (probably a new one since they hold their value so well and new vehicles provide a better interest rate than used vehicles), not a 4th gen. Just depends on how much money you want to spend, either generation won't disappoint you but each definitely has it's quirks.

Ah got it thanks for the info. I'm thinking of running volks te37x off-road. What sizing are you guys running on a 16"? And tire size and offset. I'm planing to run 16x8 +0 does that have any rubbing issue?

4th gen is great just interior is bland and I hate the star shaped HVAC controls in it.

That's what I'm planning but I love the 4th gen body style better. And if I don't get the factory navi, can I put in a double din navi system and still use the factory Bluetooth or what not

Yes you can put in a double din navigation unit in the 4th gen. Check out my build as I put one in mine.

You can even retain all the volume, channel, blue tooth steering wheel controls as well. All my steering wheel controls work on my aftermarket double din stereo.

Ahh great thanks! What's the common size and tire you guys are running. Would 18x9 +0 be fine? I'm planing on getting te37

If you get a 4th Gen (2004) Limited 4Runner, the wheels are 17" rims. I run 265/70 R17 and only get the very slightest rub when turning very sharp (turning around, parking, etc). Not even enough to worry about :)

Got it. I'm know the lowered car game but not the lifted trucks. This is opposite to me. I use to run 10.5 +24 in the rear and lowered a lot and had rubbing issues. What's the internals for water pump, timing chain spark plugs and are you guys mostly running reg oil or synthetic? 87 or 91 gas. Sorry with the question but before I buy cars/truck I like to get a lot of info.
