New muffler for Chirstmas.

So I'm thinking of buying this for my self for Christmas. Anyone wanna chime in?Also can anyone tell me if mufflers mess with your mpgs cause I'm only getting 200 a tank and I don't want to mess it with more. Anyway I'm debating these. If any one has a video of the sound with these that would be great as well.

First of all, why are you getting 200miles to a tank?!?!? That's what I get and I'm on 35's. Sounds like you need a full tune up and some MAF cleaner.
Screw that autozone muffler crap, go get yourself a flowmaster 50 series or a magnaflow or a cherry bomb. Some on here have had issues with magnaflow, some have not. I have a magnaflow with no issues paid 150$+ for it, and to be welded up and have the piping tucked up high and out of the way. I wouldn't even consider that stuff from autozone.

Also, a muffler isn't going to help or hurt your mpgs.

Yeah the tune up has been done and the MAF has been cleaned twice. I'm asking for the motor vac service for a Christmas present haha. Anyway is there a reason why I should not get the auto-zone muffler?
 
So who is doing the install and how much are you planning on doing?

-JUST the muffler (for sound)? You'll likely lose mileage at first because you can't keep your foot out of it. should be no mileage difference otherwise. perhaps a slight increase if you're nice to it.

-replace the muffler and the exhaust rearward. If you do this, up the size maybe .25-.50" from stock tubing. It will sound deeper and you should notice a little difference in power. mileage varies on your throttle control.

I ask, because you have three different inlet/outlet diameters listed in your links. I'm guessing stock is maybe 2"

I'm sure if its anything like the dynomax turbo, it will sound nice. I was questionable about buying thrush but on my other car, one of those stupid red-bullet mufflers ended up being the best exhaust combo I ever had for it.... sound and response.

I run a flow master on mine. The reason to stay away from the auto-zone stuff if quality. It's like going to 7-11 and buying a prime cut steak. So +1 on a flowmaster from me.
Also why are you getting 200 to a tank? I get 300 easy with a tank.
 
x2^^^ that auto zone muffler is basically a less than stock replacement. You're going to want to go for 2.25 or 2.5" tubing as well
 
Alright so if I stay away from the autozone stuff. Where can I get a good muffler? Near the autozone price? Or is a good muffler gonna run around 100$+. Would it be better to stick with the stock one?
 
Well, easiest way out would be to go to a reputable exhaust/muffler shop and say "I want [this muffler] on my 4runner, cat back with new tubing." and they will order it for you and put it on in a snap. Or you could find what muffler you want and order it and bring it to them and have them put it on, and they will provide the new tubing and bend it and weld it.

What's the price on the autozone stuff I don't see prices?

You can find a local muffler shop for pricing as well. My dad got a magnaflow done on his Xterra, they welded it and all for $110 including the muffler. A good muffler can run you higher, but you pay for what you get.

Autozone wants about 25-50$ a muffler.
Also me and my friend could install this our selves we have a welder so were set.
 
since you guys are doing it yourself... I'm sure it means you're just replacing the muffler and leaving the rest of the exhaust stock. worthless in my opinion except for the sound.

with that in mind... don't waste the money on an expensive, high quality muffler that's stock size. get a cheapie, it will still last awhile. When you're ready to actually upgrade the rest of the exhaust... go for the nice stuff.

for that matter, I want to do the same with mine. I have a 2.5" inlet/outlet flowtech I tried on my last car. droned too much for it, but it will make a little more noise. for now.
 
I was going down the same road your going and I was going to get a muffler for Christmas. But after days and almost weeks of looking at different sound clips I just could not decide. One person says they love the sound and the next person says it drones all the time and it sucks. So really, if you're current muffler still sounds fine, don't fix it. That's my opinion. Then I looked up.exhaust drone for t4rs and found out that on SUVs it can be worse because the cab sits over the muffler. The worst thing would be to get a muffler and pay all that money for something you are gonna hate.

Sorry for being a Debbie downer. If you really want a new one just do it, I just wanted to share my ordeal. But if you do end up changing it I would strongly advise keeping the stock muffler.
 
Cherry Bomb Vortex!! Have it on mine and love it. Drone isn't even bad enough to call drone if its there at all. Great tone and NO RASP! I welded mine into the stock system, just needed to add a small piece of tube.

Also internet sound clips are horrible for telling you how any muffler will sound in person.
 
It's would be pricier... but I always recomend Borla products.

Flowmaster and Magnaflow just scream redneck white trash to me, no offense to anyone! :biggrin2:
