New muffler ?'s for 3rd gen

I have been looking at new mufflers for my 97 4runner 3.4l 5spd manual. I have read in several different spots that the stock exhaust on this car is hard to beat which I have no problem with. What I am looking for is something with a little rumble that would turn people's head that knew what they are hearing but not ridiculously loud. Budget is $150

Cheapest solid route: Thrush welded (flowmaster copy) for ~30-40 and then another 30-40 for labor.

Or

Borla muffler (whichever, go on youtube and listen) for around 90-110.
 
I have a cherrybomb glass pack. It is definitely louder, might be a bit loud for what you are looking for but I love it. I think it cost $40
 
I have the borla, it sounds good to me, not obnoxiously loud and no annoying drone. The only time it annoys me is on the trail in 4lo.
 
from what i remember on my last 97 sr5 I had a dynomax super turbo 2.25" center in offset out, it sounded great not raspy or obnoxious ricer like v6 just a nice mild rumble. need to have my rusted out junk cut out and have another put in my 2000 soon
 
Go with the longest Borla XR-1. People say that the longer the muffler the quieter it is, but even when you buy one of the longest case performance mufflers the are still way louder than stock.
 
I have a 14 magna flow that I got installed while in high school a few years ago and it still sounds good. deep tone 2000 rpm then a little louder at about 3400 and after that all I hear is engine. Installed it was 200 bucks I think. its not crazy loud but I like it. There are a few good options which were already stated too
 
I just had the Thrush turbo put on mine, 35 for the muffler and it is perfect. Quiet, almost silent when i am not moving and then deep grumbles in lower rpm's, when i downshift revs up and sounds amazing. Not to loud but if i pull up to a light and give it some gas everyone looks to see who it is.
 
I have a flowmaster. I really wasn't choosing it for any other reason than it was what was on the shelf at auto zone for under $80. Does not sound bad OK n my opinion and most everyone else has told me the same. It can drone at low rpms but I actually like it, not annoying loud, I have no cat so its a little noisier than most people probably want a daily driver. But I live in Missouri now in the sticks where loud farm trucks with glass packs and straight pipes are the norm so it was a no brainer for me for a quick exhaust note change. I will be switching to a better muffler/exhaust setup later on.

which thrush did you put on?
 
Beware of the drone that straight flow muffs produce. There's a guy on the TundraSolutions forum that builds straight through muffs with a resonator to avoid that issue.
