new owner of 2001 4 runner, tune up questions

just bought 01 4 Runner, most everything seems tight, no leaks, was gong to do tune up since it seems to be original only to find unusual wire setup, called parts place they said only has 3 wires and 3 contacts-coils? Has 122k miles should the coils be replaced too and any other tune up advice?

are you referring to the coil packs in the ignition system? if so then yes. the 5VZ only has 3 coil packs. they each fire two cylinders. but there should be 6 plug wires.

01 limited,they told me it only had 3 wires and 3 coils at the auto shop but of course 6 plugs, it runs smooth but also seems sluggish on highway and so so gas milage that why i was going to do complete tune up, only had it one week, also replacing catalytic converters, ck engine light came on, code said converters?

Have you thought of taking in to a shop and having them do a 120k tune-up or are you a diy kind of guy? I am just suggesting the shop because I don't have the tools they do and finnaly took mine in and found a slew of problems that I was unaware of.

Coils dont need to be replaced unless they have failed, replace the plugs and wires, btw it will be rare that a coil will go out on these, ive seen 200k with stock coils/wires before and running smooth, btw these trucks are not fast so dont expect it to be lol.

If you are auto look into replacing the radiator as you can get the milkshake (look it up) , and find out what condition the timing belt, tensioner and water pump are in, they are the most crucial pieces to replace on these engines at about 100k


look into replacing your lower ball joints as they can fail and cause great damage, usual replacement should be about 90-100k miles.


Clean MAF and change fuel filter.
