New owner of '94 4Runner with some questions

Hi guys,

Am a recent owner of my 4runner, bought second hand a day ago at 155k miles. Been driving around in it and already loving it too much. There were just a few things that I have noticed as I've been driving around that I didn't notice before and wondered whether I should be concerned or not.

1. There is a grinding noise when I do sharp turns (like u-turn sharp) I did some searching and it seems like it could be the steering stops rubbing. Is this probably the case? And is that anything to be worried about?

2. When the car starts it idles pretty low until its been going for a wee while, idling down below 1000rpm, and sort of surging at that level. After a few minutes and some driving it settles out to a normal level. Occasionally the engine will die if stopped at a lights while its warming up. Looking into this some people who have had similar issues were told its possibly the AIC or EGR valve. Just wondering if that is probably the case and if so if its an easy fix. Its not too much of an issue and can live with it if its not bad for the engine. Or is it a simple fix as screwing the idle screw?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I look forward to becoming a part of the 4runner community.

Steering stops sound right. They are made to have a little plastic cap on them, but they wear out.

If your cheap, throw some grease on them every couple of weeks to quiet them up.

You can check your egr valve. Down load a factory service manual (sticky at the top of the classics forum) and it will walk you through how to test them.
