new owner of 97 SR5

i'm new to the club and just purchased a 97 SR5 with 267K from a friend who has owned it for years and wanted a suburban. i also own a 95 lexus LS400 with 215K on it and i love it. i owned a 95 4runner for a few months but gave it up for the lexus. i have always wanted a 3rd generation runner and am totally happy with this one. is there anything that i need to do to the vehicle as far as maintenance or upkeep for one with this many miles on it? thanks so much.

ha, i asked my friend that and his reply was "i don't know if it has a timing belt or chain". thus, he has NEVER replaced the belt and it has 267,900 miles on it currently!!

Yep time for a new timing belt and I believe it is cost advantageous to do the water pump at the same time

Search for "timing belt" to get more specifics

Rear axle seals are another sore point with a lot of owners-look for discoloration/oily residue at the inside of the rear drums.

Search "rear axle seals" for more detail.

And post your mileage up in the "how many miles" thread-you may have the highest -or are right up there....

Congrats on a great purchase-I had a 2nd gen also and this newer one is a treat compared to my 95. Much more comfortable for the driver and the passengers, and my dog in the way back.

Man 267K, I hope you didn't pay too much. There will be alot of work to be done on it. It may not be cost effective to fix up this vehicle unless you can do some of the work your self.

thanks for the info. i did not pay much for it at all, given it was a freind who sold and and given the mileage. i really like it better than the lexus. i hope she holds up for about 100K more!!

my friend was in real estate so he used it for highway miles a lot. i'm going to put some new tires on it and then start doing little stuff that he neglected. a timing belt will be on the list of things to change soon.
