Has the major scheduled maintenance been completed? Do you know how often the oil was changed? or what oil that was with? I would be weary with changing to synthetic with the mileage. You could potentially have leaks, as the synthetic will clean the sludge regular dino oil usually leaves to help seal gaskets.

I'm not sure about 99s and spark plugs, but if those needed to be replaced sooner, replaced? Timing belt? Scheduled lubrication? Scheduled changes of fluids, i.e. transmission, differentials, etc.?

Tire rotations done every 5k miles or so? I'd look at tire wear. Were the tires rotated on a four or five tire rotation? It would be best to keep it that way, as suddenly starting a five tire rotation could be bad, as the tread depth usually would not be the same. This assumes you don't have newer tires. But even if you do, I'd check to see if the spare matches, if not, don't start a five tire rotation.

As for other maintenance, I'd look through the maintenance shedule and see what gets done at what time, and check to see if it was completed.

If you do switch to synthetic, I'd run a search on the forum. There are many threads about oil here. I'd recommend, as I believe most members here would also, Mobil 1 and Amsoil, yet I believe Amsoil synthetic is still not API certified. From what I hear, its a great oil, and you don't really have to worry about warranty unless you purchased an extended warranty for it. I doubt you'd have a problem, yet if you do, manufacturers can blame lubrication issues on the oil not being API certified. I personally use Mobil 1, on account its easier to get imo, its API certified which I feel more comfortable with as I'm still under warranty. But run a search, you'll find lots of info that will help you make your decision.

There's probably more I'm forgetting right now, but this should help some.. :-)

thanx; im taking it in to the toyota dealer and get the 75ooo miles maintanence done. hopefully it will be cheap.. tires are brand new and i would like to get better ones soon. what grade of mobile do you use?? 5w,10w-30??? i live in HOT TX. what should i use??

10w30 synthetic would be fine down in Texas year round. I use 5w30 Mobile 1 syn with a Purelator Pure1 filter and change it every 7500 miles and I'm also running Redline synthetic in all the gear boxes.

Synthetic oils will run great in your runner
Amsoil, Mobil1, Redline, Castrol Syntec are all great oils. OEM toyota filters are good, as are Wix and Puralator. Here is a list of what I would do if I just bought a Runner with your mileage on it

1. Change Oil and fitler (Syn oil)
2. Check/change Air filter
3. Check/ change Differential fluids and transfer case fluids. (replace with syn fluid)
4. Check serpentine belt for wear
5. Check tires for wear and pressure, rotate(balance if needed)
6. Get alignment checked
7. Pull spark plugs and see what they look like (replace if needed)
8. Find out if the tranny fluid has ever been changed.
9. Find out if the coolant has been changed

Start logging fuel mileage so you can notice any trends in fuel consumption.

Enjoy your runner! Take care of it and it will run for a long long time!

Just use 5W30, 10W30 is thicker at start up, and thats where alot of engine wear happens...at the start up.

He lives in Texas so 10w30 isn't a big change in a climate that will rarely see anything near freezing but anywhere else then of course go with the 5w30.

not being a dick ron, but I disagree, 5W30 is too thick at start up, all oils are, why would you put a even thicker at start up oil in it? I plan on running 0W30 when I change out this 5W30.

but thats just me... and I am a oil geek.!!
