Hey guys I just bought a 2002 SR5 4x4 about I week ago and I love it! My name is Bill, I am 28 and I live in PA. I really want to replace the CD deck and was wondering what everyone thought would be a good replacement. Thanks in advance for any replies and I look forward to reading the forum here it seems like a great place. I would like to keep the price around $400 for a new head unit.

I can't say i have replaced my stock unit in the runner yet. But I used Crutchfield for all my other vehicles to find product that fits the vehicle.

Welcome, I opted to stay stock after having an aftermarket head unit stolen. I am not to concerned with the sound so it is fine with me.

4runner can't pretty much fit any size head unit.. kenwood's excelon head unit is best bang for ur buck and quality and they hav every type from low budget 2 high dollar set ups

What are you looking for in a head unit? Good quality/sound? *****in screen savers?

When it comes to head units I always stick with Alpine. They aren't the flashiest units out there but they have exceptional build/sound quality and are user-friendly as well. Pioneer makes a solid head unit but they are more about the ammenities than Alpine.

I'm in the same boat as a few on here.

I tried to stick with stock as long as I could as I didn't want to deal with potential theft with an aftermarket.

After 13 years the factory deck finally kicked the bucket this spring so I replaced it with a Alpine CDA 9886. iPod control, USB input and I added Sirius Sat. Radio. I am completely pleased with it. A person could also get bluetooth, xm, changer, etc.

Have heard lots of good things about Kenwoods also but from what I researched at the time Alpines had a better reputation for compatibility with iPods than Kenwoods so I went that route.

Between the two, depending on what you're looking for, there are lots of options available. I imagine either would make a person happy.

Kraco, or Audiovox gets my vote...j/k. It all depends on what you are looking for in a Head Unit as previously stated. The 4 Runner will accept either a Double DIN or Single DIN radio. I have a Kenwood Excelon 25th Anniversary in mine but you can get a good quality AM/FM/CD/MP3 from $100-OMG you want how much? from just about any major manufacturer (Sony, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC and Pioneer) I agree Crutchfield is a good source. Good luck and let us know what you choose.

I've had really good luck with my Alpine (4 years now) but if I was in the market for a HU I'd get one that has no CD and is designed for the iPod or even a double din that can play DVDs. Pioneer makes one that I've seen advertised for $400 installed.

Alpine makes one just for iPods (no CD) for under $300.

Just shop around a bit and get exactly what you get the most use out of.

Yeah...I hear you...it happenned to me twice with aftermarket in my old cars with detachable units (when I forgot to take them off).I have the stock unit in my 4R but I started looking for and aftermarket to upgrade..but debating in between this touchscreen indash permanent units but affraid to be a victim of theft for the third time unless I get an alarm system (will that make any difference?)..
anyways ...a face detachable audio for the runner its the other option for me..... they have some really good ones out there....

dunno..I'll see If I want to take thi risk of spending over 500 dollars and later on some stupid guy taking it ...

I recently replaced my stock headunit with this model Pioneer P6000UB

I've been very happy with it.

I'm thinking about getting this one too. What can you tell me about it? i've never bought an aftermarket deck before so I don't know much about this sort of thing.

I want the stock look on my 2002 SR5 so I just added this ipod adaptor to my stock head unit this weekend.

Sound quality is very soild since it interfaces through the cd changer controls. installation was pretty easy...20 minutes (plus 40 more figuring out where to mount the adaptor!!!!)

If you go with this option, just mount it in the glove box. Drill a few holes in the back of the box and you're all set!

I've been very happy with it. The controls take a little getting used to if you're used to changing songs through the iPod directly but once you get it figured out it's a breeze. I love having the remote and being able to let friends in the back change songs and everything. Sound quality is good and you have a nice selection of controls to tweak the various frequency levels to achieve the perfect sound. I would recommend upgrading your speakers as well if you're going with an aftermarket HU. A subwoofer is another good idea, that's next on my list.

PM'd you.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone! I would reallly like to go with a 2din. Ideally I would get a DVD player but the whole theft thing has me nervous. The main thing I want is IPOD controls. I guess I have some debating to do now! I have to say after reading this site I can see where my money will be going for awhile with all the mods that can be done to the 4runner. Hopefully my fiancee' doesn't mind!
