New Pioneer floating head unit - anyone tried this?

I just feel like I would need to see it in a car and move it around first. I think the concept is great, only way to get a bigger screen in the dash.

I feel like I’d have to be mindful of the heating vents in the winter overheating the screen. It happens to my work iPad every now and then when I forget to reposition a vent.

I would be all over these floating style CarPlay HU only if they had 5 icons across. Most modern day CarPlay units this size have them. I ended up ordering the T9 today. I hope it does not have too many glitches [emoji2957]

I have it, I installed mine last Wednesday and am still evaluating it before writing a review. The 9" looks great, the screen resolution is excellent - have found a few issues and want to be sure its not installation error before recommending it.

Last week I installed this head unit in my 2018 Platinum Tundra. If anyone is unfamiliar, the factory JBL system in the Tundra is ATROCIOUSLY bad. Here are my findings after a week. Spoiler...... It rocks and is totally worth the money is all aspects.

Looks -
Was afraid the new head unit would look like a Velcro’d on afterthought. Not the case at all, and it actually fits with surprisingly well with the general lines of the dash. It is also very clean / elegant / modern so it dresses up the interior very nicely. Everyone who I’ve shown it to similarly loves the looks.

Performance -
I originally tried replacing all the downstream components (amp / speakers / sub) in the truck while retaining the factory garbage JBL head unit. Made a good bit of improvement, but still wanted more. With the 8600 now it has done miracles with actually bringing the stereo to its full capacity. Sounds amazing across all levels. My stereo guy was in total shock. Simply put, the signal from the stock unit is garbage, so it’s impossible to turn chicken chit into chicken salad. The signal (along with tuning adjustability) from the new head unit is light years better.

Function -
Capacitive screen is super crisp, responsive, and easily viewed with polarized glasses on. Wireless CarPlay works flawlessly. More apps and customizable settings than I know what to do with. Retains all factory steering wheel controls and USB ports.

Negatives -
No major ones. Losing the physical volume knob took about a day to get used to using the steering wheel exclusively. Can still adjust volume on the head unit outer bezel, just no knob anymore. Actually works better on the steering wheel since skipping tracks etc is right there too.

Main issue now is can’t stress enough how nice the wireless CarPlay is in conjunction with the wireless charging center console I installed. I hate plugging in my phone now. Love the new factory head unit on my 2020 4R Pro, but now trying to come up with a solution to have a similar wireless charging / wireless CarPlay set up. Extremely convenient.

Anyhow, enough for this novel of a first post.

Is there any movement in the unit when you touch the screen firmly? Any wiggles being floating? Always wondered this. Saw that the 8600 is only like $200 more than the 7600, might as well splurge lol.

Head unit is rock solid. No shakes or vibration while driving, and no “give” or movement even when firmly applying pressure to screen at the corners.

Lol, am sure one could get it to move it you felt like it. But in normal home / auto electronic use it is very solid and feels just like a factory piece.

One thing

One thing I liked about the alpine unit is it has a switch pro type function built in, just add the wire block relay piece. Does any other floating system have this capability?

Nice timing on this thread, just ordered mine today should be here Monday. I went with the 9" unit as the 10" looked to large and less OEM

Agreed , to me - the 10" looks to large for the space but I can image the larger screen is nice

I have a standard Pioneer DD now so anything will be larger for me. I was going to go with another DD because I can't stand the floating look but might as well try it out for the benefit of the larger screen.

Resurrecting a bit of an old thread for my first post here. Just got my 2022 orp, upgraded from a 15 taco, and well, entune still sucks. I tried to get a new head unit installed, but evidently Toyota has changed the wiring harness for the 2022's, and my local shop can't do an install.

Anyone out there done a rip and replace on a 2022 head unit yet?
