New reman. CV axle; Left turn clicking.

I have a pair of remanufactured axles I just bought from O'Reilly's. I just installed the first one. And I noticed that when I was tightening the axle nut (before having someone push the brakes) that it hit a tough spot while it would rotate. And then with some pressure and a click, it would rotate further before hitting another hard spot. I was concered but hoped for the best and continued with the install. Well, I just drove down the street and the axle is clicking/popping on left turns but not on right turns. Got under it and everything looks fine. It's torqued to spec and looks like it's pushed in all the way.

Is there a chance that I didn't install this properly or do you guys think that maybe I just got a bad axle from O'Reilly's?

I just replaced both cv's with new NAPA's. No problem

Did you research this site for all of the CV axle info. Not one thread will recommend O'Reilly's. Return it & a get a "New" not "Reman" from Nappa. Life time warranty. Or OEM of course but it sounds like you dont want to spend the coin.

You're probably right. I called and I'm going to return the remanufactured ones and get new ones. I've never had a problem with O'Reilly's before so I didn't expect this to happen. I tend to avoid Napa because they dont typically stock parts that I've needed in the past. O'Reilly's is going to discount the new axles at the remanufactured axle price for me so I'll give them this one last chance to get it right.

Well from my experience, compared to dummy zone or advanced dummy's it's the best of the big three.

You might also check the needle bearing that the axle goes into on the drivers side of the differential. Mine has gone bad and started out as just a clicking while taking left turns and has gotten progressively worse and rattles over every bump now. You can check it by just getting under and trying to wiggle the axle near where it goes into the diff. Apparently it's a pretty common problem on Tacomas, but i havent read much about it here. If it is bad, ECGS makes a bronze inlaid bushing with tighter tolerances that will eliminate slop from the factory bearing, especially if youre lifted.

It was just rwd. I believe axle was bad, although I do have a squeak in the front end while off road now with the new axles installed that I didn't have before. Probably a coincidence?

I use the O'Reilly "import direct" CV axles that are new with a lifetime warranty. After going to several chain auto parts stores, I settled on these due to the physical similarities to OEM that the others lacked.

We have had 2/3 Napa's shut down around here and it's not convenient to use the one remaining, but in general, Napa has always/usually a quality source for OEM replacement parts on these trucks. With that said, second vehicle I've had the O-train CV's on and no issues.

My current 4runner is lifted 3.5" up front and so far, so good. If it fails, well, I'll go get more. No clicking though, ever.

Yep. Like I said they had the same geometry as OEM for me. Not the cheesy little cast bodies where it mates up against the differential, it has factory sized body and weight to it. That combined with lifetime warranty was enough for me.

I’m having the same issue. It’s not a pop I can hear it’s a pop I feel with my feet while driving. Doesn’t do it for every left turn and it’s hard to nail down the exact circumstances that make it pop. I did check my front diff fluid and noticed it was low so topped her off and thought that would help, but seems to still exist. Mine tends to pop on left turns almost fully turned and also when my driver side wheel hits a bump. Curious if you ever figured it out? May have to check out the bearing inside but it never made this sound till I put the new importdirect ones on. Hate to go spend more money on Napa cvs, I probably can’t get my money back even though it’s been 6 days, since they have been installed and used.


Can’t believe a repair shop charges $400+ to install these. Took me 40 mins on first one and 20 mins On 2nd

EDIT: after driving a little bit more since writing this I’ve noticed it seems more of a slipping then an actual POP. Driving me nuts
