New Remote Start for 4th Gen

I'm looking for input from others who have had remote start functionality added to their 4Runner. There haven't been any recent threads on this, and the old threads I've perused seem to be dead threads or focused on one remote start model.

Here's what I'm wanting/looking for input regarding:
-A remote start that can be installed my me (I have above average electrical skills)
-Remote start fob remote that can also maintain lock/unlock/window functions.
-Remote with a decent range (perhaps 1/4 mile or so).
-An immobilizer bypass model which can be paired that doesn't require a key.

Any insight is appreciated!

Not sure how well it meets the 1/4mi range (why do you need that much distance?) but there is a factory set-up you could probably get pretty cheap and should be plug and play?

I received a remote start for Christmas and had every intention of installing myself. A couple of things changed that. First, the purchase came with $100 towards the install so it seemed silly to waste that. Secondly, I work 7 days a week and finding 4-5 hours to do the install is almost impossible. For these reasons, I dropped my vehicle off and had it installed.

Anyways, the unit I received is the Clifford 4105X. It meets all the criteria that you described and I've been very pleased with it so far. It's also rather affordable, I want to say less than $100 without install.

I just guesstimated a decent distance. I work in a tall skyscraper where the parking garage is 10 floors below me underground. I also sometimes park in our outside satellite parking lot which is almost a quarter mile. I don't know if the factory key fob has that great of range. I know it's decent in an un-obstructed, line of sight view. I apparently am talking out my ass? I could have sworn there was an add-on kit to the Toyota RS3200 Plus that gave 4th gens remote start capabilities... but all I am seeing is 5th gen stuff and smart key stuff for Camry's...

DEI remote starts are the only brand to buy. Viper, Avital, Sidewinder, Clifford, etc (avital is common on Amazon)

Maintaining lock and unlock is easy, windows is a little more complicated but doable.

For just a little more $$$ you can get a bypass that is just as easy to install that does not require a key to be in the vehicle. I really hate leaving an extra key inside a car, especially with the increase in car burglaries these days. I also second the DEI system. I have a basic 1-way Viper system that I got for about a hundred bucks and it worked perfect. Great range too.

I now drive a GX470 and it came with some crappy low-end Code alarm remote starter (with one button remote) with no lock functionality except unlock when the remote starter is in use. Definitely get one that has lock functions and aux.

here is a remote start that has 99% of the one you linked but cost 20 dollars less and is basically the exact same, this is my go to remote start, can't beat it for 40 bucks

I bought my 4Runner used and it came with remote start that uses the factory fob - so it must exist!

this is what I would want. something that uses the factory FOB.

like press and hold the lock button. or click it 2x. something.

ive got remote start on my old 85 4runner, and its a MANUAL transmission.
my 06 limited needs to step up its game. lol.

look into compustar, to me its better than the DEI branded alarms, they are all the same just the remotes are different. window options, i think you need to add dei 530t , 2 for front and back, if you run extra wires, you can make all windows have auto up and down at the button.

Thanks for your insight. I've been looking at that Amazon page because another thread talks about the one-button 4113LX model. I'm more interested in the 4-button 4103LX model. What's the difference in your opinion to that one and the one you suggested, the 4-button 5103L? Is it just that the 5013L offers security in addition to remote start? Will that be a concern since the 4Runner comes with an alarm? I don't feel the need to increase the security if that's all it does.

Is it me, or could that type of security feature be a nuisance?

Without the 2-way remote:
-I could see a firework or something setting off the alarm
-A light fender bender or something set off the alarm while I'm nowhere near the car and unable to know the battery-draining alarm has been set off. Does that seem crazy? It says you can adjust the sensitivity. The price is solid at $70 though, I just wish it had 2-way.

Then again I have had my driver's window busted out before by a bum who tried to steal my radio. While I wish I would've had a 2-way remote to notify me down the street so I could run down and beat the dude's ass, the glass break alarm is a nice feature which would deter someone even after the glass is broken.

it will not drain the battery, alarm will only go off for a minute I believe. Two-way would be nice but remotes are expensive and still have a limited range.

I agree with this.

I would recommend going with Compustar as well. More options, way better range, the ability to upgrade without re-installing everything. You will need a module (or two) to have window control. I would also go with an iDatalink Blade-all bypass. Do you have cellular service in the parking garage? If you do, I would just spring for the Drone Mobile module and have virtually unlimited range and feedback on all functions. I wouldn't waste my time with the OEM fobs, the range is terrible on them. I run a Compustar alarm /remote start system with all the bells and whistles on my 5th gen. I'm convinced that is the way to go.


FWIW, I also run an Avital alarm/remote start system on my 4th gen. It's pretty basic and was dirt cheap but it works and has been in there since 2008 without an issue. The one thing I have never liked about it is the range has never really been good. I may upgrade some day.

Neither one of my 4runners use a bypass that requires sacrificing a key. That's old technology that I wouldn't recommend using unless that was an absolute last option.
