New shocks for OME 3 inch lift?

Okay guys, here's the fun part! My dad wants to lift our whorerunner 3 inches using the Toytec lift kit. that comes with front and rear OME coils and front top plate spacers for the 3 inch lift. He will also be getting the diff drop. I notice doesn't come with shocks. Now I tried searching on here and couldn't find much on the issue. Do I need new shocks or do the stock ones work?

ALSO, if you have ANY pics of a 3 inch lifted 3rd gen on p265/75R16s please post them here. We just got these MTZs and we don't want it to look un-proportional.

How many miles do you have on the 4runner? If you have alot or need new shocks, you should just replace them since you are going to be in there anyway. Also, what front coils are you going to get?

We replaced the shocks and springs about a year n a half ago so I would assume they are still good. My dad said that once they wear out he'll just upgrade to better longer ones. I'm getting the front coils included in the kit I posted a link to above.
 
You won't get the increased travel you normally would with the lift, particularly in the rear because the stock shocks will stop short. I would go for the Complete OME package (with pre-assembled front struts) and sell the semi-new stock shocks/struts/coils because it's a pain to disassemble the fronts (and a little dangerous to DIY) to get the coils and spacers out to put on new shocks later. Plus you'll have to realign it. Plus the OME's shock valving is paired to their coils so they will ride better.

Now would it work for on road driving? We aren't wheeling it just yet, we are still in the building stages to get it so it's protected well and performing well offroad. It'll be a 90% onroad driver and occasional offroader whenever I get my heep out there. Would I break the rear shocks since they would be at their limit?
 
I'm not sure if you'd break the shocks from over-extending them, maybe bend the shafts, but probably only if you wheel it hard. Although I think it would be ok to run on road with the stock shocks, trust me you are going to want to hit the dirt once the lift is on simply because it's fun and you can! I highly recommend doing it right the first time. It's a pita to redo the whole thing again later.

I personally think the ultra soft valving of the stock shocks with the firmness of the OME coils will ride funky. I've never felt that, but my guess is that the force of the springs would completely over-power the stock shock's ability to dampen the vibes. I would expect a harsh, bouncy ride, but I dunno for sure.

265/75/16s look fine with a 3" lift (definitley not un-proportional), but 33s look better.

Thanks bud. I'll run all that info by my dad and see what he thinks. Something tells me he's just gonna say screw it and still get this particular kit. He's capable of restraining himself from hitting the dirt...i'm not :biggrin2:. If he does get that kit, we'll see how it rides and go from there. Luckily, my buddy has a shop that he lets me use whenever I want with airtools n stuff.

That kit has a few different options for coils. if you go with anything other than the 881 coils, you need to use the OME shocks. I agree with what brian said. Do it right the 1st time especially since he is planning on replacing them in the future and the labor is pretty much the same.

Do you know what lift and tires the grey/silver one with the bull bar in the front have? This is what I'm looking for on mine and I'm due for springs and shocks.

I am planning on doing the exact samething. 3 inch OME lift. Only thing is mine just rolled over 90K and I am pretty sure I am running the orignial suspension. It's shot so the new shock question isn't really an issue. I have brand new BF AT 75s and don't want them to look small but I think they will look just fine. Not willing to sell them and dish out the extra dough for the 85s After much reading and advice from Brian2Sun it is just easier to buy the whole package. That way there should be no questions on if it will work together or not.

Also just pay the money to have them assembled. I am going to attempt to take apart an old front coil tonight with a coil compressor I rented. I will let you know how that goes. Might end up with a coil thru my ceiling or in my face.

I am currently in the saving for my OME lift stage so I am always looking for donations :)
 
Alright guys. Its been a while since I have been on here. Just wanted to post up in this thread with my opinions/experiences. We started off with just there toytec 2.5 spacers for the front and the OME 890 springs for the rear, so about 3 inches. Had kept the stock shocks for a few years cause my dad only drove it short distances. But we both knew the ride was garbage. To top it all off, the Mickey Thompson MTZs wore out in 20k miles and wore stupidly uneven even though the alignment was dead on. Never buy those tires.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago. As a late birthday gift I ordered my dad 4 new BFG ATs in the 265/75R15 flavor and some bilstein 5125 shocks for the rear to go with the OME springs. Lemme tell you, the ride is downright amazing with some good rubber and shocks under there. He wants to redo the front end now so he'll probably end up buying the OME 90004s with 881 springs for the front.

Point of this post, do it all at once. Either way, I'm ecstatic at how drastic the change was in ride improvement.
