New shocks/struts, now I have a droning noise while braking.

Hello all,

I did a complete refresh (shocks/struts/bushings/tie rods/control arm bushings/ball joints/etc) of the suspension on my 2004 4Runner SR5 4WD a few months back and immediately noticed that I had an odd droning sound that is amplified when I apply the brake. At first I thought it was ONLY when I was braking, but now I'm thinking it might be happening other times as well, but just amplified when braking.

For reference, it sounds a lot like bad tire noise, but it wasn't happening immediately before the swap out, so it's not likely due to that.

I didn't lift the truck, though the new KYB Quick Struts and KYB rear springs did increase the ride height by about 1-1.5 inches from my worn out OEM springs/struts.

Any thoughts on what this could be? My only theory is that the increased ride height somehow made the front CV joints act funny...

Sounds more like a bad wheel bearing or u-joint that needs grease. Mine is lifted over 3" up front with no diff drop and CVs are fine
 
if it didnt make the noise before the new parts, its unlikely its the u-joints on the driveshafts. but always a good idea to grease them.

i just did the KYB front/rear shocks on my 4runner & it gave it the same ~1-1.5" lift... but there is no added noise or difference in noise from the stock parts.

suspension parts like bushings, ball joints, shocks etc are not moving parts when rolling to cause a drone or vibration, that type of noise is caused by rolling parts like tires, brakes, bearings, cv axles, etc. the KYB wont lift it enough to cause cv axle angle issues so you must have something else going on. hard to diagnose noises over the internet, take it to a shop & have them test drive it to duplicate the sound & see if they cant find it.

I would check the dust shields on the brake discs. THey easily bend when working in that area.

I had this happen, and it would only happen when braking- doesnt seem to make sense, but I think the heat from braking can make it flex just enough to start touching the disc.

good point & worth checking. with the added lift of the kyb's it may need an alignment & teh tires are making the noise, but strange it would be louder on braking vs driving.

FWIW, mine didnt make any noise at all after the kybs... i waited about 500 miles to get an alignment & no change in noise before or after.
