man that looks awesome. any advice or tips on how best to make a straight cut?

I'd go with a cut off wheel on an angle grinder. Measure down from the chrome strip at a few points, mark accordingly with a sharpie and lay down a few inches of blue painters tape on the side you are going to keep (upper portion) to both direct the cut and protect the paint. Remove any left over sharpie marks with denatured alcohol.
If it's plastic scoring it with a razor blade prior to cutting would probably help and not be as big a screw up if you did go off course.

Pulling up the old threads...I like it!

Like stated above, I marked down from chrome trim and made a straight line with painters tape. Then used a die grinder to cut. A dremel would work really good as well. Any type of grinder with a thin metal cutting wheel will work. I know Sam used her dremel to cut her bumper for the ARB and it turned out great. Just plastic, cuts through very easily.

I assume it's easier to cut the rocker panels while they are still on?
