New some advice...

I drive a 2003 4Runner V8 Limited with 220K miles on it. It's an amazing truck. It's been basically bulletproof its entire life; however, I recently made the decision it is time to replace it with a new vehicle. Here is where I need a bit of guidance... I originally planned to sell the '03 T4R to a dealer (so I wasn't very concerned about replacing the timing belt); however, my Dad just told me he really likes the truck and wants to buy it.

Since the truck has 220K miles on it, I'm slightly apprehensive because I don't want to him to run into a major mechanical in the near future. Other than regular maintenance, here's what's been replaced to date:

Water pump, Idler Pulleys, Etc @ 96K
Shocks/Struts @110K
Passenger Side CV shaft @ 180K
Passenger Side Rear Axle Bearing @ 180K
Front Calipers & Rotors @ 215K

As you know, the timing belt is overdue and needs to be replaced (it's got 124K miles on it)... Thoughts on replacing the water pump too? Normally, I would think absolutely yes; however, when I had the water pump replaced at 96K the tech told me (after replacing it) the pump was in great condition and probably didn't need to be replaced. When I inspected it, the bearing seemed solid as a rock... and that my friends is why I'm conflicted. Will the existing pump laster another 80K???

You might take it to your local Toyota dealership and have them give you a quote on them purchasing it. They'll definitely tell you what needs attention mechanically (probably way more than really needs attention), and give you a low-ball price. I would start there. I definitely wouldn't tell your dad that he couldn't buy it, just make sure he knows upfront what the potential issues are. GL
