New Sound Equipment in a 10 Year Old Truck?

I’m wanting better sound inside my 2008 SR5. 95K miles and the stock non-JBL system/speakers are getting soft.

Whether I do myself or take to a shop, I’ve heard the older a vehicle, the less tight interior panels, etc. go back together resulting in buzzing/rattles from better speakers installed in an older vehicle.

Any similar experience here? Suggestions on how to achieve better sound (I want to upgrade head unit and all speakers (no amp, sub, etc.)) without creating secondary rattles, etc.?

HU first

then speakers or all at once but adding speakers to the OE HU is a waste of $$$$.

The OE speakers sound alot better with a aftermarket HU..

Have the same car with upgraded head unit and mid-grade speakers, don't have any rattling. Perhaps if they were amped and pushed, but such a problem could be solved with dynamat or aluminum backed rubber adhesive mat, which it's the same thing from Lowe's just a quarter of the price.

Just replace any broken clips from the trim panel and you shouldn't have any problems

I will second this. Get a decent aftermarket HU and you will be much happier. I put in a $65 HU, replaced the sub & added a cheap sub amp for an additional $100, the door speakers sound way better with the replacement HU. I haven't bothered to change the door speakers because they sound fine.

Do it! I just gutted my truck at 200k for a complete audio setup and don't regret it one bit. Because I added CLD and a bit of CCF/MLV, it's much tighter now than it was at 80k when I bought it. I plan to have it another 100k so totally worth it for me.

All the plastic clips, that hold the door panels on, have little rubber O-rings on them, they go all over the place. Some stay on the clip some the door some fall on the ground.
Maybe that would contribute to buzz and rattles.

I feel like if you make sure that you religiously replace any broken or lost clips, you'd be fine. It should work the same if it's assembled exactly how it was before. It's just really easy to break some of the plastic stuff when removing the trim. There's a good write up here (VERY thorough):

Also I should note that I DO have the JBL speakers. That probably does make a difference.

You guys are awesome, it’s definitely a go. May even just start with the HU based on some of your feedback and see if that alone meets my needs.
