New T4R - concerns - P0022 and head gasket

Folks,

I'm picking up a used 2006 4Runner (V6) to drive for the winter with plans to sell in the spring. I don't need it, but it was a deal I couldn't turn down - family owned since new and available at the right price. Truck has 165K miles on it. It will help to keep the Pennsylvania salt and cinders off my brand new truck this winter.

Two things I'm a little concerned about, looking to see if they are common experiences.

The first I'm failing to find much info about. In 2013, the truck went in for service with CEL light on. The following are the notes from the dealer at that time:
NEEDS TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT, WITH CAM GEARS AND TENSIONER. TOTAL COST FOR R ~|~CUSTOMER STATES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC, AND TRAC LIGHTS ARE ALL ILLUMINATED. ~|~TECH RAN FREEZE FRAME DATA AND FOUND CODE P0022 - OVER RETARD BANK 2, ACTIVE TESTED VVTI GEARS, STRETCHED TIMING CHAIN ~|~NEEDS TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT, WITH CAM GEARS AND TENSIONER. TOTAL COST FOR REPAIR $3298 PLUS TAX. CUSTOMER ADVISED. NEEDS PART#S 13506-AD010; 13050-0P010 (X2); 13540-AD011; 90105-A0214.

I think I was the one to call NFW that a timing chain needed replaced at 105K. Service was never done. I don't believe the problem ever re-surfaced. Just checking to see if others have had any experience with this code in case it should pop up again.

The second I've been reading a lot about - the head gaskets. It's taking me back to the pink milkshake issues from the 3rd gens which caused me to panic after I bought that truck. Truck has no issues that I know of. It was built in 12/2005, so I don't know if it's got the upgraded HGs. Any preventive maintenance I can do to ensure longevity of the HGs? I don't know that coolant has ever been changed, and I don't know if it's better to leave well enough alone at this point so I don't risk disturbing anything with a flush/fill.

Thanks for any thoughts!

If it runs good I'd just go as is, but than again, yes do the coolant flush and update all the servicing, that should make for a better resale value and hopefully you'll be passing it on to another grateful owner.

You could also try to contact the servicing dealership, they have more complete records from what I understand. I've already tried that by email, but got an uninformed sales person who thought the records would be where I bought it, let's see, a New Mexico Toyota dealer stores their service records at a Subaru dealer in Minnesota...yeah I'm trying real hard not to send that sarcastic response...Lesson here is to mark the email so it is forwarded to the service department.

Good luck though, should hold up really good and you may decide to keep it for a dependable go to spare.
