New tires...cant make up my mind

Aloha Kakou,

Well it has been a few months of researching my next tire and needless to say, I am still stumped. My 4r is completely stock but I am looking at upgrading from a 265/65/17 to a 265/70/17 size tire. I hardly go wheeling, but when I do it is majority sand. It is also a daily driver.

At first, I wanted a mud terrain tire because of the looks, but realized they might not do so well in sand.

I know I DONT want BFG a/t (everyone has them) or Revos (not what I am looking for). I DO want something a little different like the Mickey MTZ, Cooper STT, or something like that.

What m/t tires do the best in sand?

What are your opinions about Cooper STT tires? I have read reviews where people dont like them and other reviews where people praise them.

Any opinions or info would be great.

Have you looked into the Nitto Dune Grappler?? It'll have you covered when it comes to the sand, and the Nitto's generally have good road manners.

Listen to yourself, you answered your own question.

For sand you want a non-aggressive floatation tire. You want to float on top, not dig in, which is what a mud tire does.

I know I DONT want BFG a/t (everyone has them) ...

"everyone" has them for a reason, and their performance in sand is excellent. If you're dead set against BFG's because you want to be different then look at the Cooper ST rather than the STT.

I dont recommend an M/T if you rarely go offroad because you will be dissapointed with your value for money, road noise and tire wear.

I would often drive on sand with A/T tires at highway pressures, but I will always air down a M/T to get the extra flotation to offset the digging tendency.

Everybody has BFGs in part is because most tire shops blindly recommend them to people with trucks even those that will never go off road and they tried to sell a set to my mom for her '99 Limited which will likely never off of a gravel road at the most and BFGs as a pavent only tire is not the wisest choice.

I prefer my Nittos but I'm not sure of their sand performance.

A few guys have the Scorpian ATR's and are very pleased. I suspect they'd be ok in the sand. They aren't the evrybody has and they're rated pretty high.

They raised the car about 1 inch.
Only very slight rub at full turn but not a problem, smooth metal, very slow speed at full turn.
No lift on the car.
Smooth, quite, great for tough off roading.

Works great on the highway and at Katemcy Tx. & Moab.

look a little bit aggressive because of the biting edges and deep 18/32 tread, the center tread looks like a highway tire so I bet it would float over the sand pretty well.

Brudda is spelled Braddah...the mouth is much broader and looser than how Dog is saying it.

I am putting BFG M/T off a Jeep Rubicon on Saturday. They are pretty widely available for cheap due to their mass production and since they meant to be an OEM tire, they are much more manageable than normal M/T's in both ride and noise (well so I hear, I can tell you for sure after Saturday).

The size is slightly different, 255/75/17, but it is a true 32" and to my knowledge will fit on a non-lifted 4Runner.

I got all 5 for $450, 1 had 0 miles on it, the other 4 only had 1200 miles on them.

Nitto M/Ts are pretty nice but M/Ts suck on a DD and I'd have to spend alot more time off road to justify an M/T but if my truck becomes a weekend warrior in the next year I might get some.

I like the Nittos and think they look great but they don't offer white lettering which the lettering is only 2nd to the BFGs and I'd sport the white letters out if they had 'em.
