New tires in stock size - 4 or 5?

Looking to finally make the purchase on the falken wildpeak a/t3w in stock 265 size.

Wondering if I should get 4 or 5 though, especially since it's stock size.

My understanding is that they will be a bit larger than the stock Dunlop Grandtrek, but if I'm only using the spare in a bit of an emergency situation, surely it's fine to have a single non-matching tire until I can get the 4th tire repaired or replaced?

And I imagine doing a rotation of 4 tires vs 5 is not really gonna meaningfully improve my tire life...

You are correct. You'll be fine in emergencies. people never replace their spares which should be done every 10 years or so but it's always nice to rotate with a 5th wheel and tire if it's identical to the rest. I've had one flat in the last 20 years so it's not a' priority.

Do you plan on taking your vehicle off road regularly? If so, getting the hardier spare is definitely not a bad idea.

If rarely, consider saving yourself the cash and wait till your original spare is about 6 years old before swapping it out. Some folks I know will also swap a "replacement" tire into their spare position if they swap out with still a decent amount (say 30 to 50%) tread left. That'd be another option once you're done with your new tires.
