new tires on stock

So whenever my Yokohama geolandar's can't go anymore my dad said he would replace my tires and I think he's gonna let me pick if they're good tires. I really want an aggressive AT tire because I like the look. I don't go off road except on the occasional dirt road and some fields. I was looking at the duratracs. I really would like to know from people who have ran these tires on how it affected your gas mileage because right now im getting 21-22 in the city which is really nice. Also id be running them on stock suspension, would that work? And if people have anything on the Toyo open country AT 2 id like to hear about those too.

P.S sorry if this is an over discussed topic. i just really didnt find what i was looking for by searching.

Why go with A/T if your not using them? I learned owning bikes tires and brakes are your most important thing to trust and we dont buy brakes or tires for looks thats for sure.

I apply the same rule to tires on my 2 4runners. My work truck is driven ALOT aka 60 thousand miles a year if not more in everything highways, cities, off road, fields and mountains. A/T wear out faster are usually noisy and the handling of them isn't the best on regular roads in the end costing you more money then if you spent good money on a good set of all season right off the bat

If you're getting 21-22 mpg during "city" driving, then you'll likely not experience much of a MPG decrease. I say this because your city driving sounds like pretty much highway driving, lol.

Heavier tires like duratracs won't really affect your MPG all that much if you're just mainly driving at a constant speed because the extra work needed to get them up to speed from a standstill is not done all too often.

In real city driving, where you're constantly stopping and going is when your MPG will start to suffer with heavier tires since you're constantly using extra gas to accelerate the tire over and over again.

I agree with [MENTION=70867]Code2[/MENTION] though, it's kind of a waste to get them solely for the looks...you have to understand what you are giving up just to have this look. In addition to possibly lowering your fuel efficiency, you also give up higher speed handling and dry weather braking. It's a great all around tire if you will actually put it to use, but not any where near ideal for day to day highway/city driving duties.

Have you looked into the Cooper Discoverer ATP/AT3 tires? I've heard they are a pretty popular AT tire and might be better for your needs...and not too shabby in the looks department either.

If milage is a concern then stick with stick size and milder tire. The Yokohama geolander tire series are quality tires. Why not just replace your old set with a new set? If you want something more aggressive why not the geolander AT/S tire? It is more aggressive then the HT tire but will maintain good road manners.

Like the others mentioned if you move into a heavier tire you will see a reduction in mpg around town. Just takes more energy to keep accelerating a heavier tire in stop & go traffic.

This is a pretty late reply but I've just been thinkin and it is pretty dumb to get an AT tire just for looks so I'll probably just get another set of the tires I have now or something because they have been very good tires from what I can see. I also don't wanna lose the MPG I'm getting. I'll probably end up doing other things to the runner like getting new rims.
