new tires: Revo's, AT/S or ATR

I am looking at 3 different tires to put onto my 4Runner. I am have a 04 SR5 V8 with the 17s. 80% of my driving is on the highway, 10% is on gravel roads and the other 10% is on back country dirt roads. I am getting the 265/70R17 tire size.

My 3 choices are:
Pirelli Scorpion ATR
Birdgestone Dueler AT Revo
GoodYear Wrangler AT/S

My last set of tires was a pair of BFG Mud KM on a 98 Tacoma with a 3" lift, gears and locker in the rear. So as you can see, I am looking at a completely different tire. My Muds lasted 3 yrs and 40K before I sold it the other month, and the tires had plenty of tread left.

Don't you want to replace 2 or 4 tires instead of 3?? I would also look at the new Michelin LTX A/T-2. I would stay away from Goodyear AT/S...i would go with Goodyear Wrangler SilentARmor.

Yeah, stay away from the Goodyear AT/S. Had them on my old Jeep and they were not great. They spun too easily on dry roads, were fairly noisy and hard as nails. Wore well, however, and did good in the rain.

The Pirellis get nice reviews but I've yet to find a tire dealer that has good things to say in general about Pirellis. It's not that they say bad things, just that there's never really any enthusiasm for them. It's weird. Like no one takes them as seriously as other brands.

Definitely investigate the Michelin LTX A/T-2... they promise a lot (in the PR) but I've year to read any worthwhile reviews. Anyone know of any?

best on road manners/performance while having better off road than the michelins but only marginally less than that of the revos.

Ill throw another choice out there- Firestone Destination A/T.

Like you, I do most of my driving on-road, but encounter the occasional dirt driveway/road. I also have to pull my boat up some steep grades, some with loose terrain. So far, the Firestones have performed flawlessly.

If you check the reviews on Tirerack, they were rated very highly. There was more than one direct comparison to the Revo's (the other tire I strongly considered). The $40+ cost difference was per tire, so I decided to give them a try. So far, so good.

I like the look of the pirellis, too, but how can you pass judgement on the Michelins yet? They've only been available for a week!

Where as the Revos are going to be better off road...the Pirelli's on road...the mich's as with the last gen LT/X are going just play ho-hum vanilla.

Michelin makes great performance tires...great touring tires but their serious off road stuff, I just dont believe in.

While I dont put a whole lot of stock in personal reviews on tire rack...take a look at the survey results for michelin tires in all the truck/suv categories. The best tire they have is the Cross Terrains and they are rated like 8th best.

I'll put my 2 cents in and vote for the Revos. I bought 5 of them as I will be rotating to include the spare. Also I received a $75 rebate in the form of a Amex card. Not sure whan that deal expires so check it out.

Point taken, though luckily I'm looking for a Cross Terrain on-road performance with a little more oomph for some mild offroading. Even the Revos sound like they might be overkill for what I'll put the truck through. The A/T2 sounds like it might fit the bill.

Do you have the Pirellis? If so I'm curious what your verdict is. I'm now considering them or the A/T2 but I generally have more confidence in Michelin, which has far more of a track record with truck tires than Pirelli.

Actually i have 275/60/17 sized Toyo Proxes S/T. They give much more direct feel and offer much better on road performance than the stock Dunlops. In addition, ive done everything in the Toyo's that I have in the dunlops offroad...and had no issues.
