New to me 04 Toyota 4Runner

Hi guys. I just joined this forum and want to tell everybody hello. My wife and I recently bought her a used 04 Toyota 4runner with 135,000 miles on it. So far it is running great and not causing us any concern at all. It is loaded to the max with every available option, except 4x4.......as best I can tell. It has leather, moon roof, factory navigation, power everything. It also has the V8 engine. Very nice vehicle. We want to take it to at least 200 or 250,000 miles without any major issues.

Is there anything in particular about this vehicle I need to be concerned about? Is there some maintenance I should do or check into doing soon?

One thing I know is the 2004 software is still in the Nav. system, and I would like to update that. How do I do that and where do I buy a newer version?

Congrats on the purchase. Post some pictures.Do you have the maintenance history? If not, I recommend you to start with the Timing belt, water pump, fluids change, spark plugs... As for the Nav updates, Is it a DVD Nav?

I just purchased a2003 model this past week myself and had a machanic do a diagnosis on it to let me know what all needed done. I would check all the filters, plugs, belts, hoses, shocks and struts.as well a the breaks.

I pulled up the maintenance history on another link I found here, after inputing my info and vin number. The original owner had told me what he had done, and that confirmed it. He had replaced the water pump and timing belt at 90K at a dealer. The oil changes were all done at a local oil change place regularly, but not at a Toyota dealer. It doesn't sound like it had any other major work done. From what I can gather in a few threads on the forum, it sounds like the timing belt is the biggie. I guess I will not worry about that anymore until 180K miles.

Yes it has the factory DVD Nav. Toyota store told me it's $200 to buy a new updated DVD. I was trying to find a new one for less somewhere, but so far no luck. Any ideas? Also, I want to set it up to play an iPod too. Any ideas on that?

LOL, good luck with the nav update. I talked to the local dealer here about an update for my 03, I forget the price but it was in the $400-$500 range.

The factory NAV is DVD based. My parents just got their 2001 RX updated (2010 version) and it cost $199.00 (plus tax @ the Lexus dealer), so anything more is a scam. If you look on ebay, there are lots of updated DVDs for Toyotas. They run about $192 more or less.

I have an '08 as well and suspect it's not too hard to find a bootleg DVD though I haven't looked. I do recommend using a the USA Spec PA15-Toy adapter for the IPod. Easy to install and keeps the steering wheels controls.
