New To Me 2000 4Runner with maint update as I go.

Hello,

I just picked up a stock 2000 4Runner limited with 220000 miles. What should I look at ASAP to avoid problems or what needs to be replaced ASAP.

Vehicle is stock.

The remote to lock/unlock is not working. Everything else appears to be G2G.

This buyer's guide isn't as fleshed out as it needs to be if we're answering the same questions day after day. Not complaining, just saying we should add a few things (perhaps an easy to bang out checklist) to the guide.

LBJ's and radiator are top of my list whenever I pick up a third gen. Welcome and remember, we feed on pics ... so post em up!

I just picked up a 99 and the 3rd gen stickies have been very helpful. All fluids, lbj, front end rebuild, suspension are on my short term todo list.
 
I cannot get the front personal lights or the lower dash lights to work.; personal light bulbs look good and all fuses are good?
 
Today I followed the awesome directions on here to replace the plugs and wires. When I pulled the plugs they were hand tight. Also they were Denso K16TR11 plugs. I did a quick search and it says these are not the right plugs for my V6 engine. I installed NGK (3967) BKR5EKB-11 Standard Spark Plugs. New PCV installed.

I cleaned the MAF sensor and took out the air box for a cleaning.

I used a hanger to reach into the rubber grommet and stop it from falling into the valve cover.


Intake was pretty dirty.


Fuel filter came apart and now I need two new fuel lines.




Next up is a new radiator and thermostat, new coolant.

Your truck is going to run like brand new!
On Friday My dad and I performed afull tune up that includes:
oem spark plug wires
ngk plugs
airaid mit intake tube (the original rubber parts were cracked)
pcv & grommet (valve was stuck closed and grommet was cracked)
maf sensor clean (used about 2/3 of the can)
fuel filter
removed throttle body and cleaned (also found a loose vacuum hose)
bottle of Lucas in the tank
transfer front, rear diff gear oil change
engine oil change with oem filter

I bought my 99 from the original owner with 166 and it ran great on the test drive. After she topped off the tank for me the cel came on. My heart dropped and I drove to autozone to get it scanned. Came up with 171. I was a bit relieved and gave her $4275 for a $6500 truck with a check engine light.

Turns out it just needed a tune up as she was runnin original everything except tires t-belt and fluids. Including plugs and wires. This is where slight hesitation was comin from. Runs perfect now.

Sorry I am not thread jacking you but this tune up we did made a huge difference. My runner runs like my 2003 taco did when it was new.
 
The one picture of the fuel line looks like the fuel line is intact and just has the separated fuel filter end on it. Is there damage (like twisting) not apparent in the picture?

PS Post up some pics - specifically the passenger side rear lower control arm mount- of the undercarriage. The rust on that fuel filter is nasty.

The connectors on the fuel lines are shot. I would bet this filter has been on there for a very long time. The connectors rounded off so I need to replace them.



I will post a picture of the passenger side rear lower control arm mount- of the undercarriage tomorrow. Also the bolts snapped off the plastic shield that covered the filter area.

You may be right, Ill add a cliff notes for dummies of things to replace on the first post.
 
Toyota filters come with the bracket if that helps at all. I've not seen just the bracket sold by itself but then again I haven't looked.
 
Ok, I picked up just a filter that fits. If the bracket was not shot then I could just reuse it. So Maybe I got the wrong part. The last thing I wrenched on was a 1979 Chevy Blazer. I am learning a lot.

I also had the dealership print off my service records. Now I have a starting point for some maintenance.
