New to me 4runner :-)

First time post and proud new owner of a 1989 4runner sr5 3vze v6 5speed that's 297k miles young. Other than being slightly dusty it's in great condition. No rust what so ever. This is also my first manual car so I got some learning to do. I've read through page 145 of this section and have learned so much already and hope to learn more. With that said I do have some questions.

1. After driving 5-10 minutes I start to experience what I would call "hesitation" from the engine. Almost as if I were repeatedly jamming the gas but quickly letting go. Feels like it looses power. I can maintain speed but it does not feel comforting.

2. The floor carpet was removed by previous owner. After driving for a bit you can really start to feel the heat come up from the feet area. What would you recommend to remedie this? Add new carpet with mass lining or add some sort of insulation?

3. My temp gauge on the dash seems to occasionally work and after reading thread upon thread of blown head gaskets I need to stay on top of temp readings. I read a thread stating that I need to remove dash and tighten up some screws but I would rather have a separate mechanical gauge. To get most accurate reading with out using stock sensor, would it be better to place new sensor on top radiator hose or bottom radiator hose? (btw what is normal operating range for 3vze?)

Thanks for your help! Pictures comming soon!

Ok, I can't say I'm not surprised!

I went in and got it registered. New plates and sticker:guitar2:
The lady didn't ask about emissions.??

Since my emissions expire this month I went ahead and took it to my regular shop.

I've got some work to do and some reading too! So far I know I need a new gas cap and I have to figure out the rest. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Btw I'm from Texas just outside of Houston and look forward to being an active member on these forums!

Thanks!

Where at out side Houston? It’s a BIG city. I'm just outside Houston too, but on the south side
I know a guy that knows a guy that could get you a sticker.
Only two more years and you will be emission except!
Lots of Houston guys on this board

Thanks! Right by Baytown actually. If you happen to know anybody on the east side that is reliable knowledgable on these toyotas and reasonable let me know, I apparently need some work done.

In Texas if I'm correct, we don't need anything to do with emissions dude. I live in San Antonio, our state that I know of doesn't care about it. Congrats on the nice ride though!

I think in Harris County they still care about emissions. I'll try to start with some cheap fixes first then move up from there. Need to get HC down to pass here.

Thanks!

Harris and all county's that touch it have to pass emissions. That's what happens when you're the 4th biggest city in the country.

I'm sure I'll get it fixed soon enough. I'm not sure I'll get it done in the 15 days I was givien for a no charge inspection but we will see.

On the bright side I sorta fixed the rear window so now it goes up and down:D

She is nice and clean....
