Are there any recommended reading or training I should read before taking the 4Runner off road? It has been 28 years since doing any off roading.

IMO, the first order of business is making sure you are properly equipped and to think about what to do in case something happens. To what degree would depend on how far away from civilization you plan to go.

Things that come to mind at the moment ...
Tires in good condition? (not dry-rotted)
Practice changing front/rear tire with stock bottle jack (or however you plan to do it)
tire patch kit
spare tire in good condition and aired up
Basic tools, duct tape, ...
Water, food, clothes, survival gear
recovery gear (recovery strap, where are your recovery hooks?)

I have this book and it is a good starting point.

I was in the same boat as you back in January. I hadn't been off road since the early 80's. I bought a 2014 Trail in January and started looking at where I could go. Your best bet would be to find a local group on the internet to join for a couple weekend runs. They will know how far you can push it and what you should avoid. My first exposure was the annual Lone Star Toyota Jamboree last month in Gilmer, over east of you. I was exposed to trails I would never have even tried 30 years ago in my CJ-5 and the 4R handled them like a champ. It is way more capable than I was ready to give it credit for.
