i already have a 3rd gen runner and could find my build and look at it. but might be getting an 89 4runner, white v6 manual. trading it for my 86 toyota PU. overall i think the truck is good but it has that small oil leak in the head or something. been looking on here and noticing thats kinda common but no ways to really fix it. and on top of that any ideas on what else i might need to look at on them.

and if i get will be wanting to lift and 33"s and all that jaz so any input on that would help too

this sight helped a bunch with my 3rd gen and figure the 1st will get good too

all the info is here

id say, if you want to have the best 1st gen experience as possible, get the 22re. Buying a truck that already has problems is ...well.. problematic

The v6 is a good motor, as long as its taken care of. Issues with headgaskets is a know problem for that motor. The only real fix is to change them out. Might want to look into that oil leak a bit more before you trade.

As for fitting 33s, a simple ball joint spacer and either new rear leaves or an add a leaf will give you the clearance your looking for. The 4cly will struggle a bit with 33s and stock gears, so re gearing is recommended. The v6 will have a easier time turning the 33s.

Good Luck

Start by searching, many of your questions have probably already been addressed.
And welcome to the 1st gen group.

i would figure the v6 would be better?? i mean i want it for more power, im trading that PU thats v4 bc its under powered.

i had the 3.0 in my 93 4runner and it did just fine, but it was stock. the 22re in my 4runner now does just fine. if i was looking for a vehicle with power i would stick with something new... or you can be one of the few to swap in the 4.7 tundra motor

if i do that it would be in my 3rd gen

im not looking for something with a lot of power. i want it because i want it. just saying the 6 would be better than the 4. i think

The 3VZE does not have much more power than the 22RE, while there is a difference, some have said it's not even noticeable.

You will find many opinions here, mine is that the only way to go is 22RE and manual transmission, others will disagree.

thorrider, welcome. I have an 88 with a 3.0 and auto. trans and 5k miles on a fresh rebuild. When I was looking for a first gen I test drove 4 86-88 models.
2 had the 22RE with 5 speed, 1 had the 3.0 with a 5 speed, and 1 had the 3.0 auto.

The 22RE might be tough as nails but in my opinion it is way too small a motor in a vehicle the size of the 4Runner. Driving either of them with the 22RE I have to say I don't know if I have ever driven any vehicle that accelerates slower than they did. I live in NM and the speed limits around me are 45-55 and those trucks took FOREVER to get up to speed. So much so that I would not buy either one for that reason. I was not looking for a hot rod but was afraid I was gonna get rear ended in a 4 cylinder 4Runner.

Driving the 3.0 4Runners was a totally different experience. I ended up buying the auto trans one since the 5speed one had 336k on the original motor.
Yes I know about the Head gasket issue on the 3.0. I did a lot of things to make my 3.0 run perfect. I have NO ISSUE with the performance. It can get me up to speed fast enough for what I need and can cruise at 75-80 across the mountains in NM without breaking a sweat.
And since I replaced my engine temp sensor and O2 sensor, I have not gotten less than 18.6 MPG with the A/C running full time.

wow thanks man, thats a lot of good info.

im not sure if i am still getting it and i will check again tomorrow. i would much rather have that runner and build it up rather than the PU im trading it for.

i think i could have a better time in the runner, an d i love the removable top. but i hope i can get a dirt bike in the back of one though haha

With the top off and the roll bar removed, a bike fits no problem. Haha.

We even took the windshield and handelbars off a Polaris snowmobile to fit it in the back of my buddys 2nd gen. Haha.

ok well guess im not getting the 4runner... the guy wont respond anymore... guess im going to start working on the PU. thanks for all the help guys

Found this pic, thought I would throw it up in this thread.
