New to the T4R Family - TSB question

Hey eveyone-
I am new to the Toyota 4Runner family. I just picked up a 2003 sport with 65,000 miles. It is in excellent condition with a full dealer maintenance history.

My question is about the long list of Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that are listed here on the forum. How do I know if my vehicle has undergone any/all of the TSBs? The dealership should have a record, but do I just ask them to check for ALL of them?

If it was always serviced by the same dealer, then that dealer should have a record of the work done. TSB's aren't recalls, so work done using TSB's isn't tracked by Toyota corporate. All a TSB really does is provide documentation of a tested fix for a somewhat common (or maybe very common) problem. Any work done would be listed as typical warranty work and wouldn't necessarily be listed as TSB-related. I've noticed that my dealer sometimes - but not always - lists the TSB number in the solution/diagnosis section of the repair order. If the dealer that did all of the work is willing to share their records with you, then you should get a good idea of what was done. I'd just ask for the maintenance history rather than asking about TSB's specifiically.

I was surprised when I bought a used truck a few years ago and the Toyota dealer that worked on it refused to share the maintenance records because of "HIPAA privacy concerns". That was good for a laugh, as HIPAA relates to medical insurance records, but nonetheless they refused to give me the information. Obviously I didn't care about the previous owner's information - just the work done on the truck. The dealer where I bought the truck was not the same one that did the work; it might have helped if it were the same dealer.

As stated by toto, a technical service bulletin is different than a recall for a defect or problem.

I had a problem with the hvac blower motor that stopped working due to ice build-up. This was not a problem worthy of a recall, but Toyota did issue a TSB to help solve the problem if/when it was reported by a customer like me.
