new to toyota

This is my first Toyota so not up on alot of the ins and out. With that here's my issue just got a 1998 4 runner with 200000 miles, its smoke on start up and on giving it a quick take off but clear up. No check engine lights and runs fine any idea why it smokes

Welcome too the Toyota, you most likely wont go back to anything else. I have had very little experience with 3rd gens blowing some smoke. Usually bad rings if its a constant bad smoke while driving and most people live with it till overhaul time which can get pricey.

Also could be a bad valve seal. Expecially if the car smokes a lot on startup and then it goes away. What happens is the valve leaks oil into the cylinder on top of the piston and when you start her up it burns off and goes away. Most people live wiht this also till overhaul time.

He didn't say if it were blue or white smoke. White= blown head gasket. Blue= burning oil.

After I posted I went to eat lunch and thought the same thing. I was going to ask him what color is the smoke!!!! But if it was a blown headgasket the smoke would never stop or he would be out of coolant and overheating. Thats why I suspected oil!

Smoke is blue gray color,not using cooling or should I said I haven't had to add any and oil level don't look like its changing if it is its hard to tell by the stick

Blue is motor oil.

Do you see blue smoke every time you start or only see in the morning?

Mine seems to be using about a 1/2 qt. every 1k. As my buddy says, the thing has a quarter million miles on it, it deserves to use a little bit of oil. LOL

I agree it has alot of miles but if its something I can fix i'll try,only smoke alot after sitting for a while or after running hard down the interstate and stopping and taking back off but it clear right up.
