Ask about the timing chain and head gasket history. If unknown I would reccomend you replace the chain, tensioner and gears ASAP, you don't have to pull the head to do it but it wouldn't hurt one bit to slap a new head gasket under there for peace of mind. Check out engnbldr for good parts and prices if you are going to do this yourself.
NW runners are typically in good shape as far as rust goes, but take a good long look at the frame, especially inside the rails. Mud and gunk can build up in there and over time it will rust.

Yeah, find out when the timing chain was done last. The plastic guides wear out over time and folks like to ignore them until it's too late.

Other than that there's no surprises waiting for you, just check for all the stuff you'd check on any used vehicle. Welcome to the family, and...

Looks nice! From the looks of it, it can use some new rear springs. These older toyotas have a pretty common sag in the rear end due to the springs wearing out.

That is a nice looking rig. Besides what has been said (rear springs and chain guides) there isn't much to worry about on these things. The 22RE with a five speed is a great and bullet proof combo in stock form. Basic maintenance and they will run forever. Have fun and if you haven't wheeled one stock (providing that one is) I'm sure you will be surprised with their capabilities out of the box. I came from full size rigs too and haven't looked back.

Yeah I did some researching and thats what I read was the rear leafs sag.
And I've always been an American Muscle guy so this will be a new experince.

Welcome to the 4Runner world! I was born and raised about 20 miles north of Pasco, out off of Taylor Flats. It's cool to see folks on here from the Tri-Cities.

I recently picked up an 87 here in Salt Lake City and the biggest thing was the rust issue. Fortunately I found one with very little. I'd be surprised to see one in southeast Washington with much rust.

And the rig has 195k with the timing chain, oil pump and clutch replaced at 165k. Is that decent?

Yes, and yes.

As a rule Toyota (used to) use chains for interference engines and belts for non interference engines. It's a smart rule.

I also just got rid of my 89 Bronco, and picked up a 92 4runner. Just about doubled my mileage!! My first Toyota and so far I am liking it!
