New t4r owner in the San Bernardino Mountains
Hey what's up guys, my name is Brian and i'm new to the forum and to 4runners. I drove an '82 yota 4x4 pickup a few years ago but that was straight axle and carbureted so i'm relatively new to this whole thing.
So today i got a 1987 SR5 22re 4x4 w56 with auto hubs thats in pretty rough condition but the engine was rebuilt with only 2000 something miles on it, it has a little lift(front torsions cranked[yes i know, change that soon] and 3 add a leafs in the rear(2 trail-gears and 1 tacoma leaf), so it sits a little lower in the front but not bad) with 33x12.50x15's on stock gears, it's also got a snorkel that is mounted but not hooked up.
To the forum nazi's, do not chime in with crappy remarks or tell me how the search button works, i've already done plenty of searching and am only posting this for nice people with real knowledge who feel like helping me out because they love 4runners, as your moms told you when you were kids, if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all
So far my main questions would be:
1) How do i get this thing to get out of its own way? i live in the mountains and have a really steep driveway and it just seems like a total dog going up it. My last yota had almost the same motor and it would do burnouts if i popped the clutch. the guy i got it from(super cool and seems totally honest, even brought his wife and kids with him) said that it just needs gearing for the 33's, so i wanted to get you opinions on what to do.
2) I've been reading a lot about the right way to lift the front and what i've come up with is getting some balljoint spacers from the vendors on this site and getting some 4-6" lift shocks. Some people also say to do a body lift and a drive terrain lift but i'm on a seriously tiny budget and wont even be able to do the balljoint spacers for a couple months(need to do smog, registration and front tires first) so i'm really not looking to spend on things i don't actually need. I'm not sure how exactly to get it to match the rear as i have no idea what size lift is back there, the dude said its 6-8", but im thinking more towards the lower end of that.
3) Also the rear hatch doesn't open from the outside even with the key and there is no pull handle unless you roll down the window and reach inside, is this common? Anyone have a fix for it?
I'm sure i will have many more questions as time passes, and i will always use the search button before i post so don't worry haha If its not ok for me to post these questions in my intro post just let me know nicely and i will move it to the proper category.
i can also post some photos if you'd like to check out or if they will help determine the lift i need for the front.
