New transmission or rebuilt?

I have not had to venture down this road just yet but figure it is inevitable. My 2002 4R has 373,000 miles on he original transmission. Eventually it will go, and when that happens I would like to have my decision made. The assumed a340f can be rebuilt for $1400, a new one installed from Toyota will run $3500 +\- with the family discount. They will not allow me to purchase and install myself .

i just picked up one for 700$ with 105k miles on it from my local junkyard.

You can buy a reman OEM for about $1600 with a reman torque converter. That includes shipping to you, and a prepaid return label for the core.
