You realize that winches are made for that right? The holes are there to access the winch clutch.

Just to clarify. That pic should have resulted in the crush cans being crushed/bent and the aluminum bumper being tweaked in some way. The frame horns themselves are solid and were probably fine. The crush cans go on front of the horns and attached the aluminum stock bumper.
However, it looks like the impact could have been above the bumper.. Like it hid some high bumper in front of it..
Now with a plate/winch bumper. Airbags may have went off and frame may have bent. Hard to say, but I've seen bent frame horns where the bumper itself was not really damaged.

Really wish I was able to customize this as I love the look of this but don't want the upper bar.

If you can't get this one without the bull bar try Southern Style Offroad. Their bumper looks almost exactly the same and you can get it with or without the bar.

While you can get it without the hoop, the Warn is priced at $520.25 (local pickup) while the SSO quickly gets over $800 without shipping. I am all for supporting the little guy but $250 more makes that difficult.

Did not realize SSO had gone up so much. I got mine for under 600 with a 20" light bar and Bull Bar.

I received a response and there is not an option for no hoop and no current plans for that option.

FYI, it would probably take me 20min to cut off that hoop and make it look like it was never there. Easy work for anyone who is familiar with metal fabrication. Not sure what the finish is, but painting would probably be the most time consuming part. However, it is possible it is part of the structure, Sort of doubt it though...

I agree and thought of that. I built my rear bumper on my last rig so know I can do it, just would rather not have to do it :lol:

they are very close to the same design. I do like the idea of less wait time. I waited 11 weeks for my sliders from Schrockworks, even though they advertised 4-6 weeks. Warn is a bigger company that probably can deliver faster AND they don't charge extra for powder coat ... C4 doesn't even offer powder coat!

So regarding replacing the stock bumper and crush cans with good ol' solid steel, I guess it's the same as trying to sling shot a motorcycle through a 30 mph u-curve at 60 mph? (Done this many times. Only regretted it once.) Meaning worrying about the consequences is just a matter of risk tolerance. I have a Pelfreybilt hidden mount in my garage waiting for warm weather to be installed. I have been ruminating over the loss of the crumple zone and the possible damage to my frame not to mention soft body parts. Hmm ...
Perhaps it's a matter of perspective? Life is inheritantly dangerous so I guess quibbling over such trivialities is mute. A texting semi driver could t-bone me and render all of my safety nannies useless. Hell I used to lay on the rear window shelf of my mom's old sedan when she used to run errands.

I've looked at a number of them in salvage yards. I've looked through a bunch online at the insurance auctions. I've yet to see a single example where the crush can collapsed and the frame didn't. That doesn't mean it can't happen - but if it does ever happen, it doesn't happen often. The airbags go off with a fairly significant margin before the crush cans collapse. I think it's fair to say that elimination of them has no bearing at all on airbags. I do think they have some value in collisions, but how much is hard to say.
I'd guess that little strip of foam adds more protection from incidental airbag deployment than everything else inside the bumper assembly.
Edit: I just went out and measured the thickness of the steel used in those bumper extensions. It's about .090. I'm guessing its 2mm and I measured a bit over. I think it's exactly the same thickness as the frame horns. So it would reason that they would collapse at about the same time. The crush cans have an area near the front with more stamped in weakening area than the frame horns - but they also have an octagonal shape that may be stronger in resisting deformation in some impacts.
