Newb! '95 SR5.

Just picked up a '95 w/ 104K miles on it. Sweet condition but I still have to take it to a mechanic for the check. Dealer wanted to seal the buy and gave me (in writing of course) the right to reverse the sale if we find something nasty. Engine's great but Tranny concerns me. Seems to slip. But god she's beautiful!

Dark and raining but you get the idea. Doesn't look 10 yrs old.

Searching around the forum I see that I have to check the HG status too. This is my backup/foulweather ride. Primary is '04 Solara Ragtop. I'm big into SolaraGuy.com so I was glad to find you guys out here weeks ago when I was deciding if the 4R was what I wanted. Very helpful. Thanks and I'll CU in the threads!

Great, she checked out! Would have like to get a compression check but as I'm sure you guys know it would be 1-2 hours of labor to do that. I should have know, because I have the 92 Camry 3.0. Looks like the same engine sideways.

Now to ditch the old rusty 'Burban...

I promise not to let this happen to the 4R. (as if it could...)

At 104K miles - main thing I'd check is when the timing belt was done last --- should've been done already ... might wanna do it again soon. Other than that normal maintenance is about all that's needed ... oh, and check the CV boots - they create quite a mess when they're blown ... 5 cans of Gunk later and I'm still cleanin' my motor up :arrow: but at 170K on my '94 it still runs like a champ!

Kelly BB was $8K, I paid $7K. Private sale was $6500. eh.... not the best deal but it'll last me. There was no sticker for the timing belt so I'm taking it on faith. I have to get the repair manual. If it's like the Camry, it's easy to pop off the upper cover and check the condition. CV boots look good but after driving her for a week I think the FL CV joint is on the rocks. Backing into a space it started to catch and make an awful noise... solution for now is "Don't turn the wheel all the way to the left."

Just one total Noob question... I have no manual and I can't seem to find a way to make the dome light come on with the door open. Stupid but the courtesy lights alone just don't do it for me.

Thanks for the tips! Now to get me a T4R sticker!

On the dome light are you referring to the switch on the ceiling? Should have 3 switch positions - ON, OFF, and DOOR. Switching to DOOR should turn 'em on & off via the door switches ......

Also, on the noise you hear with the steering turned all the way - it may not be the CV ... could be the steering stoppers scraching up against the frame - there are some plastic (I think) nuts that go on those ... when they're worn, metal will show through and rub on the stopper, making a pretty mean noise. That and a few other things could be causing the noise ... Simple lube job all around on all that stuff might be the answer before assuming the CV joints are bad..... (at 170K miles I haven't had one go out - just the boots blow and grease fly everywhere)...

I have the moon roof so it's really two "map" lights each with a push button just over the rear view.

DOH!!! Okay, I'm a complete moron... just went out to check and sure enough, there's a dome light way back there. Never saw it because the only time I thought about it was when it was dark. (I just discovered that I have rear heating as well) On with the learning curve... Thanks!
