OK, so you may have guessed by my username that I'm a Jeep guy.
I'm here because I'm researching buying a new 4runner to use as mostly a daily driver. Driving a built 2 door Wrangler with 35" tires and lockers front and rear does have its limitations every day and I want a moderately off road capable (or better) 4wd SUV that can hold more people and stuff and is not terrible on the road. I had looked at a Grand Cherokee but one look at their forums and it's obvious Chrysler has driven the quality of that into the ground and I'm not dumping my money into that steaming pile of dung, not to mention that the local Jeep dealer hasn't inspired any confidence in the one warranty item I had on my Wrangler. The 4runner is at the top of my list right now given what I'm looking for from a daily driver.
Since I love to tinker with my vehicles, I'll probably end up doing some minor mods to the 4runner I buy. I've been doing a bit of searching on here and on Google but I can't quite find the right set of keywords to find what I'm looking for. I built a gear ratio calculator you may have heard of. It lets me pick the transmission, transfer case, and all that and it spits out all the numbers I want. But I can't for the life of me figure out which transmission and transfer case comes in the latest 4runners. I know it's a 5 speed automatic and I can find the low range gear but it would be better if I can just pick it from my list. I also don't know what differentials are under the 4runner so I am having a hard time finding information about what's available for them as far as upgrades.
I'm sure the information is very obviously posted somewhere but my Google-fu is not working for some reason. Can some helpful person out there point me in the right direction? I appreciate it.
