Newbe on the Forum and i need help with my 99T4R!!

Hello everbody. I need service on my 1999 T4R 2WD A/T with a 153,xxx miles. I bought my T4R with 100,xxx miles. I'm planning on moving away from my home town in a couple of months and want my truck serviced before i leave. My friend is a mechanic and does not charge for labor.
1. I have never changed the rear differential fluid. I'm beginning to hear a thud every time i change the gear. What is best to do? Flush or drain and fill? Also, what fluid is best to use with my mileage?
2. I also have stock shocks and I'm noticing bad handling on the road. I was wondering if Monroe Sensa Trac shocks are any good. right now they are buy 3 get one free after mail in rebate. My friend works at oreillys auto parts and gave me a price of $240 for all 4 and of course will get back money after mail in rebate. I never go off roading do to my truck is a 2WD. i want more comfort on road.
3. Last but not least, I'm coming up on another oil change. I've been using Pennzoil High Mileage 10w-40 since i bought my truck. I always changed the oil every 3k or 3 months. Can i switch to Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40 Synthetic without any engine problem? I would like to change the oil a bit longer.

Thanks for any help i can get. I really love my T4R and i want the best for it.

The answers to your questions will be subjective, but I'll go ahead.

1) I would think that its your drive shaft making the thud, and not your diff fluid. I've seen many trucks that have gone a long way without ever changing the diff fluid and been fine. (Don't tell anyone that). Check the grease fittings on the drive shaft (especially at the slip yolk).

2) Monroe shocks are fine.

3) Id stick to the same oil. If you don't have ANY oil leaks, you may try and switch to Mobil 1. With my last truck I switched to Mobil 1 at 180k and it started leaking everywhere...including the rear main. I think I attribute most of it due to the fact I used an Amsoil product which cleaned the crank, and prepped it for synthetic.

I also am not a believer in using synthetic engine oil. For other fluids yes its good. After 3k miles, dyno oil and synthetic oil will both have the same amount of "dirt" in it. If you wanna pay 2x as much to change it, thats your deal :)
 
The clunk could very well be u-joints, if you mean when your switching through the gears as in (P,N,D,R) not going from 1 to 2nd, 3rd so on and so forth.

I would put my money on u-joints.
 
With all due respect to BajaRunner (you can't go wrong with dino and 3k OCI); I do believe in synthetic. I change every 6000-6500 and Blackstone Labs says I could go further. So I pay twice as much per change, go twice as far, and get dirty half as often. 11 years and 130,000 and so far so good. Time will tell if the protection is as good as dino with 3K, but a lot of people think it is.

I switched to full syn at 70k maybe 4 years ago when the price differential became much smaller (I ran 5K OCI on Castrol syn blend). I have always run the suggested 5W-30. No leaks so far, I have yet to add a drop between changes.

As far as the shocks. go its my opinion that monroe shocks are garbage spend some extra money and get bilsteins, you'll never change them again. I bought all four for my 2000 for 3320. I'm sure most will agree. My two cents.
