newbie and already having issues

you might have tried n-b-w instead of screws to hold the sunroof in, and perhaps you'd be less likely to gouge yourself. damn. i wouldn't drive it with those bad boys poking through like that.

my bad.. heres some pics

Whoa! That's gnarly...if you were to go rock crawling :D

Good fix! I was reading somewhere that lexan (or maybe it was plexiglass?) can turn yellow in the sun...might be good to just quick research it and see, just in case you are worried about it.

That so funny about the battery issue! So, I bought my 1990 4runner 22re and literally the day I bought it I drive it up to the wife's parent's house to meet up with them and the wife for dinner and I get out and lock it and realize I left the lights on, so I unlock it and turn the lights off and I cannot even remember why, but I flipped the switch to turn the lights on again and...nothing! I thought that was really, really strange. But I left it at that and went in for dinner.

So...we are getting ready to leave and she is in our '98 (4runner, of course:D) and I'm in the '90 and the thing wouldn't start. I'm thinking....'Uh...hmmm.' She see's whats going on and kinda freaks out a little and asks me what is wrong with it (and I have no idea). Well, several weeks ago I drove it out to the street to clean up the garage and I go back out there at night to pull it in and same thing...dead as a doornail. Try turning the lights on and off and on and back and forth and nothing. *SIGH* so I got get the tools to pull the battery thinking it is the battery which it shouldn't be because it had a good charge on it earlier in the day.

Well, I come back out and the lights are on! What the heck! So I very cautiously start it up and drive it into the garage. I turn it off but leave the key in and lights on and start pulling on stuff. I moved the lead battery cable and the whole thing shut off...literally it was like I flipped a switch. I did this a few times. So I cut the sheathing on the lead battery wire (once battery is removed of course) and come to find out the lead + battery cable is hanging on by a thread! I was real happy to have finally found the culprit and I was kinda wondering if this was a stock thing or not, since the wiring looked untouched, but inside the sheathing it looked like two separate pieces of wiring...kinda hard to explain.

Sounds like you maybe had the exact same thing going on! My 4runner is under the knife right now (complete windshield channel replacement!) but before it gets back on the road I'm going to replace that entire lead.

Glad to hear things are shaping up for ya man!:trophy:

Amen! My cousin's grandson (hence, my grand-nephew - OMG, I feel so old now- LOL!) say's that he likes to ride my truck. I asked him, "Why", and he said, "Because it's indestructible." "What makes you say that?", I asked. He replies, that he saw it on Top Gear's Killing a Toyota feature. :)

Couple of important things first-gens need are a good inspection, correction of hacks and abuses/neglect that previous owners did to restore it to stock, and fixing the stock items that Toyota electrical engineers of those days messed up.

LOL! Tnx, Dude.

Actually, we're discussing starting issue on O.P.'s other post here

Would like to know what month Richiegrich's 4Runner was made because his does not have a starter relay, while mine, made in August 1986 has it.

Haha right on! Now, was this relay issue only in the pre-87 trucks or did it extend into later years? I've got a '90 (technically an 89) 22re but it sounds like that issue didn't carry over to the 2nd gens? I remember reading about that starter relay issue and thought 'crap, I need to fix that' but maybe I don't after all!

did you find out where all the coolant blasted out from?

the hose coming from the water pump apparently busted.

i got semi tinted lexan, so im hoping that helps with the yellowing..

found a bull bar on cl for forty bucks and swooped it up. put a coat of primer on it and painted it with truck bed liner.

You gotta check your schematic, do a couple of voltage and resistance checks, OR physically trace wiring.

Seems like...
1989-1992 4Runner V6, and 1989-1990 Pickup V6 are also affected. Thanks, DrCreosote, for sharing your schematic.

To verify if your truck uses same relay connector as first-gen 22R-E, use this guide:

It did. Early trucks had the ignition switch wired straight to the starter solenoid. They added a relay apparently some time halfway through the '86 model year, but as RAD has demonstrated, even that doesn't completely fix it. Whether it affects you just depends on the condition of your ignition switch and wiring terminations, and you don't really know that until one day your truck says "click-thunk" and won't start.

Thanks guys! I'll definitely check this out.
