Newbie: Common Problems for Gen4 4Runners

Hi
I'm looking into purchasing a Gen 4 4Runner, but before I do I just want to get an idea of what I'm in for in terms of common problems. Besides the cracked dash issue cited in the sticky thread above, what other common problems are there?

I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra that has had one problem after another. The most recent issue is the Strawberry Milkshake of Death (SMOD). The Gen 2 Xs have the tranny cooler run through the radiator, and there was a class action lawsuit against Nissan for poor quality that causes a pipe to break inside the radiator, allowing the transmission fluid and radiator coolant to mix. This shorts the transmission computer and damages the tranny itself, resulting in a $4k-6k repair. Unfortunately the class action lawsuit doesn't apply to trucks over 100k miles, and those out of warranty such as myself are SOL.

Living in a rural area I need a 4 wheel drive for light hauling and to handle muddy roads. I've always liked the 4Runner but never could afford one. Now with my X rusting in a hay field, I'm looking to replace it with something that I can trust.

But before I leap I need to know what I'm in for. I'm particularly interested in the 6 cylinder version of the 4Runner. Opinions are appreciated. Thanks!

There is a sticky at the top of forum with PrePurchase advise and related FAQ. It should cover most situations.

Wow, that's a huge bummer that clas action suit had mileage limits.

I'd recommend you get an 06 or newer 4 runner, there some changes to engine and trans for the later models.

80k free repair limit, $2,000 deductible at 90k, $3,000 at 100k or 8-10 years whichever comes first. I've always thought class actions benefited lawyers most, and this "settlement" just proves it to me. Nissan evidently couldn't care less, which is why I'm quitting them just as I quit the US Big 3 in the 1980s. I've sunk thousands into that truck and all it has done is chewed a hole in my wallet. I'm just done with it.

I'm actually looking at a 2005. What's the big difference between 05-06?
