Hello everybody! I'm a long time Toyota fan, but I've never owned a 4runner. I'm looking to buy a 99 or 00 within the next couple of months and while doing my research found 4-Ripcord's post on 3rd gens. Probably the most comprehensive write up I've seen for a buyer's guide.

Anyway, stoked to get out there soon.

Thanks 4Running Daily!

Here it is:

1999 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 manual 5spd with factory locker, clean !!

Price seems a bit steep, but it's a 5 speed with an e-locker so I think it's worth trying to talk the dealer down. How often do you see 5 speeds with e-lockers?

I'm in Clairemont just south of the 52. I used to own an XJ, but sold it about a year ago because the maintenance was getting away from me with 200k on it. I'm looking forward to wheeling again.

Miles are kind of high for a $10k asking price. Timing Belt and Water Pump need to be done a second time within the next 20k miles, assuming they haven't been done already. It says it's been completely serviced, I would try to find out exactly what they did. Diff fluids, oil, spark plugs etc. The clutch plates would be pretty old at 190k miles as well. You should find out if that has been done or not before purchasing.

Another thing is making sure that it goes into 4WD High, 4WD Low, and the elocker engages in 4 Low.

When negotiating a deal, assuming everything works properly and it drives nicely down the road, I would pay $10,000 if the timing belt and water pump have been done a second time, and the clutch discs have already been replaced. I would pay $8,000 is the timing belt and water pump haven't been done, and the clutch has been done. If the clutch slips and the timing belt and water pump haven't been done, don't pay more then $7,000.

Got that? Haha

I've owned 2 5-speeds with the e-locker and I didn't look particularly hard for either one. In fact, in both cases I found what I was looking for in about a week. So although it's a little less common, I don't think it's quite as rare as that dealer is hyping. Or maybe it's just that I live in CO and there is a 3rd gen on every block.

IMO, $10k is just insane. I got my '99 for $4500 and it has 20k fewer miles than that one. Maybe it's a SoCal thing. At least make them throw in some floor mats, lol.

That's a $5k truck at most IMO. Even in California. I picked mine up in Cali with 140k for under $4k - 97 limited 4x4 w/ factory locker. Granted I was a tad on the lucky side, but that's way too steep of a price for the mileage. Personally I wouldn't even consider it, especially if you have time to keep searching. A good deal can be found with patience and dedication to searching craigslist constantly.

White n slow,

I'm with you on 10k being way too high. I was thinking I'd start with 6k and go from there, what do you think you'd do?

I am also in San Diego, I bet we have been looking at all the same 4runners on craigslist. IMO that is too much for what you get.

For the price difference between that one and a similar one without lockers you can put an ARB in the front and rear with some cash left over.

Given the difference between asking price and what I'd be willing to pay for it, I would probably pass on that one. I can't imagine any dealer would drop 50% off their price, they can just wait for the next chump to come along. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask though.

I would pay $6500 tops if everything is immaculate and the maintenance records are complete (t-belt/water pump, LBJ's). I would feel more comfortable below $6k.

That's a good point. If you can find a good deal on a non-locked runner, you can get an ARB and on-board air for a little under $2k with labor.

Probably! Maybe some wheeling in Anza is in our futures...

Good point. Could be something to bring up...
