Newbie Looking For Upgrade Advice

Hi, Im new to the website and need some advise on upgrading my 4runner. I have a 1996 SR5 4X4 with a 3.4 V6. I neep to know what performance parts get you the most horsepower for your money. Im also looking into getting a brush guard and would like some imput on which ones are better than others. Any advice on Making my 4Runner look better would be great.

There are not many things you can do short of supercharging our 4runners to make them faster. Deckplate mod MIGHT get you 4 HP. Add a different air filter and you might get 1-2 HP. A muffler may help it breathe a little easier. I guess you could do new headers, but those are a pain to change.

Hmm...to make it look better.

1. Wash it
2. Fresh wax
3. Tint the front windows
4. LED tail lights
5. Add a bug guard
6. Bushwacker flares

Thanks for the info. I just ordered a K&N cold air intake Ive heard claims that they are suposed to increase horsepower by 10% but i seriously doubt those claims are true, what kind of hp gain can I expect from a k&n cai? Im figuring 5-8 hp... what do you think?
I try to wash it once a week but were going into spring right now in alaska so its almost impossible to keep clean :mad: .... Ill wash it soon and post some new pics.
 
I hate to tell you but doing the Deckplate mod ($20) will give you just as much HP as the K&N CAI.

With a stock vehicle you go go with a 265/75/R16. With 3" of lift you can fit 285/75/R16.

Haha thanks, Ive searched around for a couple days but havnt really seen alot of actual hp gains with mods. I was hoping to get at least 5 hp out of a k&n cai but o well guess thats how it goes.
 
You're not going to get anything really noticeable from an intake anyway, so I wouldn't fret about which one you get. As far as the deckplate mod... it's a function over form mod. The k&n will give your bay a nice mean look and it will have a distinctive growl at WOT.

Well whats the point of getting a k&n cai if it doesnt increase hp? I thought that was the main reason for people buying them..
 
Aside from Supercharging $$$$. Here are some basics you can do to get more HP from your T4R:

Take any slack out of your throttle cable as well.
Also: weight/Weight, & more weight. Your 4Runner looks nice & lite already. If you have a hitch, take it off. That's the name of the game for dragracers. If you don't go 4 wheeling, buy some steet/highway tires. Nobby tires look nice, but slow you down.
If you plan on 4 wheeling do the opposite.

There is less resistance on the K&N filter and intake tube.

Although people like to think the deck plate mod will be the same it is not. The deckplate allows you to remove some resistance when you want and place the deck plate back when you need to do water crossings, etc.

I can surely state that more air will flow through a conical filter 10" long and 5-7" in diameter then it will through a 4" hole in the airbox. (not to mention the deckplate leaves the restrictive intake tube)

The more other goodies you add like a full exhaust, headers, S/C, etc., the more you will notice the benefits from the K&N or the like. There are many other options that allow you to use a "dry" filter instead of the K&N although I have never had problems with my K&N filters and oil blow through.

Exactly my point. In addition, you will get a negligible amount of extra hp with any decrease in resistance on the airflow into the intake but since we're talking about heavy suv's, 3-5 whp at the most isn't going to be very noticeable.
 
:iagree: the deckplate mod is cheaper and can bennifit but then you have to remove the silencer and all that too to reallly get the most affect, but its very easy to do and convenient, but you already ordered the KnN anyway. A dryflow filter is nice just cause you dont have to re-oil it. ive got volants powe-core on there and it for one cut down some of the noise. trust me It can get annoying sometimes haha, but anyway everyone pretty much sais everything you can do and i dont want to sound like an echo but yes welome to the forum! post some pics when you get the puppy in there.

Im going to be doing more off roading than street racing :) even though I dont mean to "go" offroading, someplaces in alaska thats your only option. I just painted my hitch the other day, along whith that weird spoiler thing :p haha, they were rusted and didnt look all that good. I also just bought some smoke window vent visors, Im hoping those will give it a better look.
 
i personally think it'd look cool if you rhino lined your chrome bumpers and got the black extend-a-fenders, a black brush guard with lights, led tails, hid's, painted your rims black and got some knobby 265/75's. maybe some cooper ST's cause i've never seen a 4runner with those. i almost got them and their cheap, like 700 even for 265/75's.
