Newbie Looking For Upgrade Advice

i personally think it'd look cool if you rhino lined your chrome bumpers and got the black extend-a-fenders, a black brush guard with lights, led tails, hid's, painted your rims black and got some knobby 265/75's. maybe some cooper ST's cause i've never seen a 4runner with those. i almost got them and their cheap, like 700 even for 265/75's.
Ya I was thinking about painting the bumpers but there just so shinny :D haha but I am seriously considering painting the rims a metalic black color. I just painted my tow hitch and that weird spoiler thing so i want to see how those come out fist.

jspagna1 was talking about dragracing.

No street racing. When your drag racing at thetrack the least amount of weight will get you down the track quicker.
Maybe I mentioned it because I also own a 66' Mustang ????

Also, hey he lives in Alaska. You can drag race your snowmobile??

Either way, he's right. The best bang for your buck by far is going to be s/c. There's a few bolt ons you can do but nothing that will produce substantial power gains.

We call them snowmachines up here haha, im sure people drag them up here ive just never looked into it. I dont even own one, there a ton of fun but also expensive and i would rather put my money towards somthing else.

Any way, for now im looking to do some cheaper mods just to get my 4runner sounding good, I figure if I get a noticible gain in power it will just be a plus. So ive got the k&n on the way and im also doing some exterior things to it look better. Arnt those superchargers like 2,400?

If you get the 7th injector kit and a few other items with the SC it could probably be that expensive, but a SC alone is not nearly that expensive...at least in the lower 48.

I'm assuming you'll be doing the work yourself?

yeah well thats a pretty good price if you find one for that. oh and youll love the sound of your intake at least for the 1st bit, lol it gets pretty loud, mine is enclosed in a box so it can get real loud at WOT but yeah i think the intake is worth the $$ it looks cool too!

The thing about alaska is everything costs so much to ship up here. I was looking into getting a hunter brush guard but they wanted 175.00 just to ship it! . On average id say its 2-3 times more expensive to ship larger items up to ak than it is to get them shipped to somewere in the lower 48. I gues its just something im gona have to get use to.

As for myself doing the work..... Im gona try to do as much as i can but I dont know alot about engines. Id like to learn so well see, If i did get a supercharger eventually, i would probually have my brother in law help me with the install. He knows a lot more that I do haha.

Ya im excited about getting my K&N intake in :D . I put a CAI on my 95 4runner and it gave it a nice growl :) . I sold the 95 to upgrade to the 3rd generationg so I got a 96 haha, more power and i love the 96 tail gate compared to the 95.

Here are some pics of the back end of my 4runner.

There is less resistance on the K&N filter and intake tube.

Although people like to think the deck plate mod will be the same it is not. The deckplate allows you to remove some resistance when you want and place the deck plate back when you need to do water crossings, etc.

I can surely state that more air will flow through a conical filter 10" long and 5-7" in diameter then it will through a 4" hole in the airbox. (not to mention the deckplate leaves the restrictive intake tube)

You can surely state this? Do you have dyno charts to prove it? Gadget does and it proves otherwise.

The Deckplate Mod combined with an Amsoil oiled foam filter will provide more HP increase over the K&N for way less $$. You can also do the 'O' Gasket mod and the ISR mod for further air flow improvements.

are you refering to all cold air intakes? or just the k&n? cause i dont know, to me it seems that the deckplae mod, in oder to be effective you must do the isr, and "o" gasket mod to get the results of a "true" CAI ? im just asking too cause i dont have a dyno but it just makes sence

While the K&N filter has more surface area and would appear to be able to pull more air in than a 4" hole in the airbox the intake tube still can only pull so much air through itself so filter size rarely matters.

It really comes down to how much you paid for your HP increase and $50 (filter and deckplate) is much easier for me to swallow than $200 for a filter kit.

I dynoed my truck a while back and got a peak increase of 6whp in the mid rpm range buty having the ISR mod done might have given me another pony or two but even the 6whp really isn't noticeable.

If I can find my charts I'll post them up but right now I have no idea where they are.

All im saying is that my 4runner feels more responsive, better exceleration, now that I have the k&n.

Sounds Great to :)

I certainly won't dispute Gadgets dyno tests, he spent alot of time testing configurations. His tests were done with some serious mods minus a MAF upgrade or calibration. I feel the K&N provided too much for the stock MAF to deal with. With an upgrade or calibration unit he could tune it do deal with the extra flow and get a better representation of the correct gains or losses.

Even with the deck plate mod he still suggests to remove the elbow that leads to the fender. That takes away from the ease of use for the deckplate IMO.

Here is the dyno for a stock 3.4 taco, before and after FIPK.
The intake temp is slightly higher but you can see that there is an increase in power.

Bottom line, any of these mods will help you make gains. Gadget points out how the K&N damaged his 4Runner so that might not be the best choice out there although I have not heard of others with this damage.

JA, your site has helped me many times and I thank you for your very informative write ups. Thanks.

Hey just wondering if building a heat shield box would help the
K&N at all?

I figure I could direct the intake to suck colder air from the
origonal hole were the origonal toyota intake was.... Just a
question

yes im sure it makes a huge difference. hot air from the engine is bad news for an open intake, while having a box like your talking about is more effective with sucking up that cold air. plus IMO it sounds even better! my buddy has the k&n in his 04 tacoma and it kinda has a raspy growl while with the box it sounds very smooth and clean. i dont know if a box would make that difference?
