newbie question: do wheel spacers or larger than stock wheels/tires affect safety?

Quick question for you guys. Like pretty much everyone here, i'd like to add performance and aesthetic enhancements to hopefully a 05 sport when toyota finally releases them.

One major and costly enhancement i'd like to make involves the wheels and tires. I would like to move up in size as well as make the wheels come out further from the body on both sides.

What kind of engineering/physics dangers are involved in moving up from the stock tire size as well as adding wheel spacers.

i was thinking adding spacers would make the car less susceptible to roll over, however, that wouldnt make sense b/c then should all SUVs come with wider widths stock?

With wheel size, for either performance or off road, im concerned that the car was engineered and built specifically for the 16 or 17 inch size and moving up or down would obviously create a more unstable condition. Also of course going bigger would cause less avialable spring compression due to the shortened distance from wheel to body.

basically, with my limited knowledge now, i think that wheel spacers and increased wheel size decrease "safety" from an toyota engineering standpoint, but how big of a safety issue is it?

larger dubs, more weight

people overlook this, but unless you're getting FORGED rims that are larger, going up a size will decrease your braking performance siginificantly. . .that, and the larger rotational mass will decrease your acceleration. Just something to consider. A good measure for cars is about a pound per inch of diameter (17" rims=17lb is a GOOD size). . .for 4Runners, I don't know how much the stockers weight, probably at least 35lbs, so a forged rim that's 18" wouldn't be so bad. . .I like the forged rims on tirerack.com listed for our 4Runners, just to $$$$ imo
