I'm not sure how many dealers you have in your area but what I would do is go to each dealers website find a Limited in there inventory listing and submit for a quote or place a bid that is about 3K under MSRP price. Do the same price to all the dealers and the one that gives you the best price, take that price and use it to try and get the others to match or beat. If nobody will beat that price then start working with the dealer that gave you the best price and try and work out the best deal you can.

I think you should start at $500 below invoice, and be prepared to pay up to $500 over invoice. I would make the dealer fax you a copy of the invoice, don't take their word on it.

That's what my plan is, based on my conversations with dealers, auto brokers, and my internet research, I think it is a good plan

Let me know how this plan goes... I think if your looking for a limited this may work as they are on the lots a bit longer. But SR5's don't stay on the lot for longer than a day where I'm at.

You really need to google
"how to buy a new car" and
"10 ways car dealers make money"
and read /research and then repeat.... read/research.

A couple of tips..

Do your homework and find the dealer invoice cost at Edmunds.com. Where you start out the offer kind of depends on your area and supply and demand. Down here where the local economy is pretty good and the fact that they are are hot sellers right now so I would start out at invoice down here.Where you are at and the state of your local economy plays into that.

Do not be afraid to get up and walk away and go to another dealer .If your not getting up to check another dealer at least 3-4 times or more then your not playing THEIR game right.

If you are leary about face to face at the dealership, make your deals online as ALL dealers now have internet sales people.

If you do go to a dealership ,find a car that has the same or very similar options not worrying about the color you want .Test drive it and pretend that is the one you are dealing on. Once you come to a agreement on all the terms that's when you say, ok but only if you get me one in "so and so ext. and int. colors" that you want. Again, get ready to get up and walk out because they might say no because they want to sell you THAT car on their lot on that day. They WILL find you the right color combo.

Do not get caught up in the "how much do you want to pay a month game" that they all play. They play the deal sheet game at some super high monthly payment and then come back with one that is alot lower without the telling you the final cost. You want bottom line how much it cost.

Big one ....Get pre-approved for the loan at the lowest going rate and bring proof BEFORE you go to the dealership. This is a ace up your sleeve to pit your financing against theirs, and believe me they want to finance you if you have good credit .A car loan is secured credit and a relatively low risk loan...as in,if you don't pay ,they come and get it.They make alot of their money in financing. They must give you something as a tradeoff for financing with them and you tell them you want " a no deductable extended warranty(at least 5 years/100000 mile)",gap ins and life insurance BEFORE they send you back to finance. Don't just go for "that they will match it"

Goog Luck!

I agree with everything Harper7 said. It's all about doing your research, taking your time, not getting emotional and paying close attention to the small details.

A week ago Friday a dealer called and offered me a '10 Limited at 500 bucks over invoice. I thought it a little strange and told the sales manager that I was going to wait (plus I think I'll do better if I wait until the end of February or March)... he called again this past Friday and offered to sell at invoice - but then told me that the Money Factor on a lease was going to be more that what he quoted the previous week. During the conversation, he agreed to come down on the Money Factor. Since I'm going on vacation in a couple of days and they don't have the color I want, I again decided to wait. Hopefully it will be worth waiting. But who knows.... hopefully all this bad press will help?????

Good luck.

I'm in the southeast, and I had an SR5 negotiated down to invoice with a dealer transfer. I was trying to get it lower when someone else bought the car (wasn't on the lot, was still a week from being available) from under me. Will try again shortly.
