I am thinking of buying a 91 4runner with v-6 and auto, with 99K miles. Any thing to look out for. They are asking 4k for it. great body and interior.

Yeah for the most part. Head gasket goes between the cylinder heads and the engine block, in the case of the 3.0 V6 the exhaust overheated the passenger side head gasket causing it to fail in enough instances to cause Toyota to recall some of them.

other than the head gasket take it for a test drive and see if its acceleration is fast enough for ya. they didnt nickname it the 3.slow for nothin

HMMMM

I used to wheel a stock samurai, so slow isn't a problem. Whats with the steering recall? The header isn't that big of a deal. If it is on the recall list adn bad I will take it in, if I buy it. The only thing I can find visually is the drivers seat is torn up bad. Trying to get a hold of the person who owns it for a test drive.

Get the VIN from the truck, go to a Toy dealer, and ask him if the 3.0 head gasket and steering relay rod recalls have been done. If they don't know what you mean find another dealer.

For info on the recalls try GOOGLE.

i would recomend paying to have it taken to a toyota dealership just to get them to check it out, and have a good look over it. they would likely find anything that you would miss. also ask for a compression test. it would help you figure out what kind of repairs you could be looking at after buying.

I think you might want to listen to what he is saying about the "HEAD GASKET" if it has not been done & you need one it going to cost you between $1200 & $1800.
Good Luck

?????

First off this is only a 4000 dollar vehicle. The cost of having a stealership to do a vehicle inspection is recockulous. And I only have to worry about the cost of a head gasket, cause I can do the rest my self. I'm really only looking at this 4runner cause it is a 1991 sr5 with only 99,000 miles. Most 4runner of this age are getting close to 200,000 miles. I would rather do an engine swap than have some one else rape me for 1500-2000 grand for a head gasket replacement. Those gaskets go for what a couple hundred bucks for a set? I was more conserned with what to look for. Plus there is a head gasket recall, and steering recall.

they head gasket recall campaign has been closed so they will not replace it for free. the steering recall is a new issue so its still open. to have a dealership to inspect it is not rediculous having them repair everything is. To be quite honest 4k is about fair market value unless its only 2wd then its less the 90 to 92 are less desireable due to the engine issues

HMM

Well, I went one better. A friend of the family is going to sell me her 92,4X4 v6 5speed 4runner for $3500. It has 150,000 miles but it has had regular maintenance. It is in perfect condition. Less A fender that needs replacing and the rear window issues.
