Newer 4Runner/Taco

So one of my long time requirements for a vehicle is for it to be manual, really not a fan of automatic transmissions. This leaves me with the 3rd gen 4Runner as the latest year I can drive.

However, I had a thought last night. Does anyone know at what year the 4Runner and taco really started to diverge? I know you can still get a manual transmission in the Tacoma’s, and if newer generations are similar/the same as the 4runner, could a swap to a manual transmission be possible?!

well with the electronics all being combined these days...the best bet would be to get a 4.0/6 speed from a tacoma or FJ Cruiser and swap into a 4 runner.

I see zero reason you couldn't swap a 5/6 speed from a Taco into a 4th gen. That being said, Aisin makes the best AT transmission in the world, and I'm not sure why you'd want to ditch such a solid platform. Not to mention the huge benefits that an AT provide off-road.

Some people just really like manual. The control is great and not to mention the "sportyness" that comes with it. To each their own. Aisin also makes a really nice M/T. the R150F (used from mid 80s to mid 00s) is a great transmission.

Jk, makes complete sense to me. Hell, you're talking to a guy who gets hot and sweaty every time a diesel vehicle drives by.

It’s too bad the manual isn’t offered on really anything anymore except sports cars... lucky to find a 5 speed in the T4R I picked up yesterday. Exact same vehicle I learned to drive stick in 20 years ago.

Even sporty cars are phasing out manuals... All 2019 Model Audi's will be auto, and even the new generation BMW 3 series will only come in auto as well. :sad:

The lack of manual transmissions on newer cars will keep me from buying one. Even a fast auto car is not as fun to drive as my supercharged manual 3rd gen.

Out of curiosity, have you tried a newer sport paddle transmission? I had a 335i with the sport automatic trans, shifts were ludicrously fast, and it was an amazingly enjoyable transmission to operate.

Not to take over the OP's post, but yes. A 335i was the last fun car I drove. Honestly, the transmission ruined the experience for me, I would have had way more fun if it were manual. I'm not saying autos aren't really good these days, they are, they just feel boring to me. Great car though...I-6 TT.

Our 03 Taco has a manual transmission. Since picking it up, I haven't found another manual in SoCal.

I love how my CTS-V only option was a 6 speed tremec manual. Made searching easier.
