NH Oil undercoating, anyone?

So these guys have a local outlet for me, and I have an appointment next week.

Spoke with the owner, asking about the process.

Since my '96 4Runner did spend a few winters in NY before becoming a summer only truck, there is some scaling/rust, but no egregious rot of any kind.

That's where this stuff excels, apparently.

Just curious if anyone has thoughts on preparation.

I asked about descaling, steam bathing, scrubbing, wire brushing etc.

He said they *can* do that, at added cost (which he didn't get into, and I'll ask when I drop it off).

Then said they often see equally good results simply applying the oil annually, and knocking off stuff that starts to flake away due to the action of the oil.

Just not sure if that tracks with others experiences, or if he's suggesting it to streamline his work load and not have to do a bunch of tedious drudgery labor (which I am totally willing to pay for if the results are better).

For any type of spray on metal protection. The metal has to be free from scale and dirt etc. If not, when scale flakes off you have bare metal exposed to the elements again.

Paint, just like the fluids and oils purpose is to keep oxygen from hitting the metal surface. Thus creates an oxygen barrier which wont let the metal rust.

That's all these coatings do. They stick to the metal and create a barrier. Doesn't really matter if its oil, transmission fluid, wax, Fluid Film, woolswax, Bar oil.

Thanks Brillo, kinda my thoughts as well, but according to the dude, it soaks in and works the rust loose, seeking base metal.

BS? No idea.

He did discuss applying some rust converter (sounded similar in concept to the "Extend" product from 30 years or whatever ago).

I'll chat with him when I drop it off, but I'm inclined to have them do some extra detailing work prior to application for sure.

I spray both the NH oil and Fluid film. typically I brush off any dirt and hit it with a needler scaller if needed, usually just blow it off with air and spray it on thick.

I do touch up yearly as they tend to wash off in the high spray areas.

But good stuff!! will do wonders to hold off the rust.

It could work loose rust. I never used it. Anything that helps protect metal is definitely a big plus in the rust belt. I expect it to be just like everything else.

Looks like something like the old Ziebart undercoatings.

I say it is probably a good coating..

The 3rd gen frames mostly rust from the inside out though. So I don't know if they are going to clean the inside of the frame out and coat it too or just election coat the outside only.

Good info on the inside out rust, I'd planned on asking them to shoot the insides anyway, but this makes me even more certain.

It was my understanding as well that it's an annual treatment affair, which is fine by me for the cost. I will make sure they know I'm desiring a better result than average since I'm starting with a minor mess, and am willing to pay for the extra attention.

Hopefully, between that, only driving it in the non salt season, and only doing maybe 5K miles per year, this will have her looking pretty for many years to come! :rockon:

Yes it will help big time. By the time I get a hold of a 3rd gen. The frame is always holy. Which is fine by me as it helps my welding skills and if it's way too gone. I will part it out.
