Nitto Terragrappler Review

Upgraded my 16' SR5 rims with no-name tires to Tundra 17's with Nittograpplers sized 265/70/17s. Had them installed Friday night for $539, including tax, and took them to Paragon Off-Road Park here in Pennsylvania Saturday.

The ride there, 90 miles, was very smooth and quiet. The tires handled well at speeds up to 85mph. It snowed lightly on my drive up there and I had no problems at all. Once at the park, we drove through some deep snow, 6-9 inches in some parts, and took some decent trails, greens and blues. A few of the guys in the group had some dedicated MTs, and they experienced a lot more sliding on the snow and ice covered trails than I did. At the 'play' area, they had some nice hills and creek beds and I had no problem climbing up any of them.

So far, so good. I put another 300 miles on them today, driving to NYC and they were great.

I love my Terra Grapplers too! I also did some wheelin' in the snow and I was able to get over a few obstacles easier than those with MTs. Love them on the road as well . . . .

Yeah, these are some of my favorite tires. I've heard that MTs tend to be worse in snow than ATs, especially when they are not siped.

A friend of mine has the Revos on his Explorer and loves them, but they are pretty price. The Revos give more of a 'soccer mom' look than the Grapplers, which are a little more aggresive.

My friend has some on his chevy when we went to colorado!!! Not as good as his super swampers if you ask me... Never the less great tires.

The Nittos have very decent pavement manners for an AT tire that handles off road well also.
BFG A/Ts can't claim the same and I've drien on two sets of them and I know their dry.wet pavement manners leave a bit to be desired.

I'm very happy with my Nittos.

I was definately planning on going with the Nitto's but then I ran into a deal on the Revos that I couldn't refuse. I do love the look of the Terragraplers though.

I'm starting to hear bad things from people about the BFG AT's now. I really think they're a tire of the past. Everytime I talk to someone about them it's always, "They're a good tire, but <enter newer tire> had better traction on all different surfaces".

Well, there's finally some objective evidence via Consumer Reports for the Nittos and Revos and they both scored very well. In typical CR fashion they left out some hugely relevent piece of info which, in this case, is any test of BFG KOs. There's only a bazillion of them on the road. Makes WAY to much sense to include them in the test.

I believe the Consumer Reports test was of 265/70/17 "P" tires and not "LT" tires. Nitto only offers this size in a "Passenger" and the Revo tested was a "Passenger" -- the Revo is available in either the "Passenger" or "Light Truck" versions. The BFG A/T is only available in "Light Truck", hence it was not tested.

Out of curiosity, what tire pressure are you guys running with your Terragrapplers? I have been using 35psi, but have not experimented.

I run 35psi for daily driving. For the parks or other off-roading, I drop down to 18.

I tried 30 and 32 for daily driving, but felt they lost a little grip. It's a smoother ride, but it's a truck damn it, that's how I'm going to drive it.

I am at 35 psi too.....I have not really experimented either, with the exception of the 40 psi the dealer had them at....that was too much!

35psi also and found no reason to experiment. The ride is excellent IMO.

True, but the article title is All-terrain tires and the mention of the fact that they're all P-rated is done somewhat incidentally a ways down the page. Considering that many people shopping for the tires in the test would be considering AT KOs as well, and the fact that there are a bazillion KOs in service, it seems to me they should be mentioned somewhere whether it be in the main ratings or a sidebar or anywhere on the site. Nothing.

All the off roading books I've read have stressed going to L/T tires, but with the large amount of off roading represented here on P-rated tires with no issues, I'm softening on that, personally.

The TerraGrapplers seem like a great value. Might be my next tire.

I was told by a lot of people that I would regret going with LT tires, but I just don't see the difference for a daily driver that sees the trails maybe twice a month. If you tow, I can see why you'd want to go with a LT, but a P gives you a better ride at a lower price. Off-road, the Ps also 'hug' the rocks better since they don't have as many plys as an LT. Sure, they may puncture easier, but with new tire technology, that's less and less of an issue. I'm sure for hardcore rock-climbing it's better to have a LT tire, but for most of us, it's doesn't really make sense.

I know from personal experience that BFGs don't compare to Nittos for daily driving detail due to their poor hydroplaning resistance and their dry grip is so-so on pavement plus everybody and their granma has 'em and I wanted something different.
The Nittos,while they do have a slightly stiff ride,they have impressed me so far.
